"The city of Lus was sacked," Dekres shrugs, "we had no warning and no hope." He turns his face away from Rinus, staring idly at the refugees.

"Those lucky enough to survive the initial attack fled into the mountains outside of Lus, for the past five or so days, we have fled like animals, constantly chased by those...brutes," he spits.

"Last night, for our final push, the rest of the unit," he raises his arm, motioning to the other surviving soldiers, as if to clarify the point, "stood, in vain I assume, against the horde...we four and the twenty odd survivors are all that remains of that group."

Dek returns his gaze to Rinus, "what, may I ask, happened to Highburn?"
Bleh, not my best writing ever, but I'm just off a 7 hour shift and I needed to post >.> Hopefully my writing gets better again the more I get into it.

"This is Highburn, or rather whats left of her," Felon walked up to the new arrivals from Lus, "It seems both towns suffered simultaneous attacks and similar fates. Its tragic that you have lost so many."

He looked at the few that joined the soldiers. It seemed as if their path was cemented now, Felon could see no other options.

Emma came out to see what all the commotion was about. It seemed that survivors from Lus were here. By the looks of it, they weren't able to salvage near as much as Highburn had. She nodded to herself and walked up to a few of the women, "I'm sure we can find room in our tents to accommodate you and your children, please come with me."

"Wait, so you were pursued?" Rinus asked sharply and urgently, staring at each of the new soldiers in turn. An icy knot was forming in his gut, a feeling of grave apprehension. "How many followed you, and how far behind are they?" Next to him, Buyir suddenly realized the same thing his captain had, and stiffened, his eyes scanning the land to the south intently.

~~

Snow coated Ravius' clothing like a month's worth of dust. Every now and then he would stir, in order to shake it off, but there was little else he could do. He hated this constant sitting and watching; he needed to move about and keep his limbs warm. The top of the Tower was exposed to the wind, and the Enemy wasn't doing anything interesting...

He sat up taller for a moment, straining to perceive a roving band of horsemen who were once again passing very close to the path the caravan had taken. They still did not find it, however, and simply continued their route. He slumped back down, the danger passed.

Wait, what's this?

The band had suddenly and abruptly stopped. They were too far away for him to tell what they were doing exactly, but they were milling about. Then, all of a sudden, almost as soon as they came to a halt, they took off again, this time as fast as a horse could run, back towards the enemy camp. Ravius' eyes darted about as he observed other war-bands do the same, all stopping abruptly and then high-tailing it back to base. Something was happening.

It was then, as the soldier was turning to descend the stairs, that he noticed a large knot of black smoke wafting off of the cliffs from the refugee camp.

~~

Hot food on a cold winter's day in the wilds would always cheer the spirits and rouse the soul to song. That was exactly the intention and outcome of the large fire Griger Lucas and his pals had started near the center of camp; to lighten the mood and provide some semblance of normalcy for themselves and those around them. Some smuggled casks of beer were brought out and passed around, some drinking songs were started, and general merriment was attempted.

They failed to notice, of course, the imminent danger of the large amount of inky smoke being blown through the camp and off the side of the cliffs nearby, a signal as plain as day for anyone who wanted to see.

Weiss finally walked up to Rinus and spoke...

"Sorry but we aren't entirely sure how many there are...we were kind of running for our lives."

He tried to think for a little bit...

"Well I can tell you that there was alot of them and I'd assume they are pretty close actually...depending on how well they have been able to navigate the terain."

Weiss shruged and started walking away...

"But of course I'm just a soldier, and I'm not one for detail."

Elliara just glared over at the other people trying to celebrate and thought to herself....

(What do they think they are even doing?...What's the point we have not accomplished anything, I find these things so..pointless)

She started muttering to herself...

"pfft Idiots...all of them."

She left to get away from them...then she noticed smoke...

"Hmmm things are going to get interesting...."

Sorry this isn't very good, I wanted to get something in. I'll try and edit it a little bit later

Yan, who was now feeling better, was watching the villagers taking out food and drinks, observing the more cheerful behavior of the people. Yan played with the thought of joining them, if just for one drink, but then remembered the last time he had been drunk while on duty, and this frankly wasn't the time. Not for him.

He turned his back on the villagers, and instead turned his attention towards Rinus and the new group of arrivals. They were from Lus, Yan guessed, and there was no doubt their story would be told to everyone soon. All other things set aside, it was at least comforting to know they weren't the only survivors this side of the mountains. If there were some, there could very possibly be more, or so did he hope.

As Yan looked back towards the villagers something caught his vision. Smoke? Yan blinked his eyes, it was still there. A small, but fully visible cloud of smoke was rising from the cliffs villager's camp, and as Yan followed the pillar upwards with his eyes a chill ran down his spine. He caught a quick glimpse of Rinus, he didn't appear to have noticed it, and most if not all of the villagers seemed oblivious to the danger. Yan, more afraid than he'd like to admit, hastily moved towards the villagers and the sources of the smoke.
Regardless if the enemy had seen them or not, someone would be severely yelled at for this, and although maybe not by Yan, he would enjoy watching it.

"What are you trying to pull, Ochren?"

Someone was holding the old man by his shoulders, not roughly but firmly. A few moments earlier, he had tried to kick snow onto the fire and stomp it out, but without success. The oblivious revelers pulled him away before he could do any good.

"The smoke." he said, "That fire is going to show everyone where we are. Look at the smoke!"

Emotional Turnoil

Don't have much time to write right now but my mind is racing I feel like it needs to be written in ink. This is a time of turmoil, a time of desperate measures and a time to block out emotions. In a situation like this, a good soldier should be able to ignore their feelings and focus on the problems at hand, and yet all I am thinking about is my emotions. Does this make me a bad soldier? Am I putting the already vulnerable townsfolk in a greater danger by compromising my emotional state of mind? My father always taught me to embrace emotions when the time is right, times of relaxation and calm are the time for your emotions to be released, love who you love, hate who you hate. And yet in times where people are in danger and their lives at risk one must push out the emotions. I'm sorry father but I have failed you, my emotions are getting the best of me and I am unable to even think clearly about the lives I am putting at risk. All I can think about is Yan, I cant help but to think I feel something towards him, and does he feel the same? My past experiences with so called 'love' have jaded my perspective on the matter but this week has turned my world upside down in more ways then I could have imagined possible. I will write more later, Rinus wont appreciate me scribbling in my journal right now.

Elliara noticed Ochren yelling about the smoke and how it was showing everyone where they are.

"Hmmmm Smart old man, I guess that there are a few intelligent ones among these fools..."

Elliara decided to go and help out the old man, but of course only because it would actually help her....she didn't really feel like going through another attack or something already and especially not if it would be brought on by fools messing around when they should be more serious about their current situation...when she reached them she put her deformed hand on the shoulder of the person holding Ochren...

"This old man is speaking the truth, if this stupid thing continues then the smoke from the fire is going to draw in everyone in the area that can see the smoke.....Do you really want to be responsible for another attack?"

Yan abruptly shoved an unsuspecting villager watching the growing tumult to the side, and stepped closer to the fire. Paying little mind to his own safety and comfort, Yan used his boots to kick the still burning logs out in the surrounding snow where they gave off loud hisses, as the flames were snuffed out, and snow turned into vapor.

"What the fuck were you thinking?" Yan yelled to no one in particular among the villagers, his voice vibrating more with fear than with rage. Suddenly, Yan felt bad. What would it help yelling at them? Besides, it wasn't their fault, not really. He and the other soldiers should have been more observant, reacted quicker.

Elliara watched Yan put out the fire, and yell at the Crowd...she left Ochren and starts over to Yan...

"About time someone did something about these fucking idiots!" Elliara yelled to Yan, loud enough so that the entire crowd could hear her voice...She was not there to make friends, and she didn't give a damn what anyone thought of her...

Yan was caught by surprise by the young woman with severed hand's words. Her loud voice dumbstruck him at first, and for a short moment he thought she was angry at him. As he realized this was not the case, he watched her with interest. Young, attractive, she had proven to be strong willed and not afraid to voice her thoughts. Yan had to suppress a laughter, it was amusing how well she matched the stereotype of what Yan called 'his type'.

Snapping back to reality again, Yan realized the effect her words might have had on the other villagers, and more specifically on Griger Lucas and his ilk. He wasn't too sure on how they would react to being called 'fucking idiots' by a girl not in her twenties. Yan knew his right eye hadn't completely turned back to its natural color from the fight in the inn, but he did know that if a fight broke out now it would end much more quickly.

When Elliara reached Yan she looked him over...Elliara was intrigued by this man...he seemed strong, not too bad looking, and unlike most people seemed to understand what was going on, but at the same time to her it seemed like he cared about the villagers more than himself, and was reluctant to scare them...she sure wasn't...

"Yeah that's right I called you all idiots! Want to know why? Because that fire was putting off so much smoke that everyone out there probably knows we are here and may even be getting ready to attack again at any moment...So while you were all having your fun you may have just caused us to die!" Elliara announced to the Crowd in such a loud voice that she didn't even know she was capable of.

Felon rubbed the bridge of his nose in distaste, the woman was right to say that they should put out the fires, but her abrasive voice and loud screaming tone was not helping the situation. He watched as the crowd looked at her, some with understanding, more with anger and he knew that she was not making any friends of this group. Sighing quietly he walked up to where the woman was screaming, "Peace, one doesn't want to eliminate one tell-tale by introducing another."

Elliara finally started to calm down, and turned to speak to the person who interupted her...

"Well someone had to make them stop, would you rather I sit by and watch them like a good little girl as they ruin everything?" Elliara asked rather quietly now so that only the newcomer heard her.

"Aye there is nothing wrong with pointing out error, especially if it prevents are destruction, but I believe the term, 'you catch more flies with honey,' applies here," Felon smiled letting her know that he meant no offense, "I assure you I am on your side, though maybe a little more subtle?"

Elliara finally relaxes, he was right of course yelling at them was not going to do anything really except for anger people...while it was rather funny to her to see there reactions she did not gain anything from it.

"Alright you win, we do things your way" Elliara says to Felon in a relaxed and quiet tone.

Then she leans into him and whispers right into his ear "But if anyone ever does anything foolish that could bring harm to me again, they may wake up to find me plunging my dagger into their heart" Elliara said in a cold tone that no young lady her age should have been able to use.

Griger Lucas was not happy. This should not have come as surprise, of course, but this time he really wasn't happy. The villagers around him had mixed reactions; some back away quietly, some stared at the eastern horizon in sudden realization and fear, and some, like Lucas and his goons, got angry. Danger be damned, this little upstart wench and her solider friend had just called him an idiot and put out his fire.

"Oi, *****!" Griger growled rudely, shoving his way up to where the girl stood, talking quietly with Felon. "You've got way too much fucking nerve!" His band of "merry men" followed him, looking not at all complacent. There were murmurs and whispers all around, but nobody moved.

"How about me and m'boys pound a little o' that spark out of ya, eh?" Griger ignored the presence of Felon and Yan, placing a hand roughly on the girl's shoulder and pushing her backwards.

~~

"Then we must move." Rinus said quickly, turning away from the newcomers and mounting his horse. "Welcome to the unit, gentlemen. Try not get us all kil-" he stopped as he caught sight of the fire, the smoke, and the commotion. Cursing himself for not catching this before it started, he took off towards the growing crowd of villagers, hoping he would get there before anyone did anything idiotic.

Felon moved in front of Lucas, making sure that he was between the angry man and the woman, "Now sir," he started making sir to sound like more of an insult than a title, "The fact that you already laid a hand on the woman unwarranted, dictates some sort of punishment, however I am willing to ignore what happened if you simply walk away now," he made sure one hand was on his sword, "This doesn't have to end more badly than it already looks like it will."

Elliara was beggining to rather like Felon, even if he annoyed her a little bit at first...

"Yes of course, I wouldn't want you getting hurt." Elliara said in a sweet but obviously mocking tone to Lucas, as she slowly slipped out her concealed dagger so that no one would notice...

"Hey, back off, soldier boy!" Griger spat, barely bridling his fist. "We ain't gonna kill her, just... teach her a wenches' place." He grinned evily at the girl, but then reverted to rage once more in seeing that his threat did not frighten her in the least.

Elliara's next comment didn't help much, and Griger began to advance, leaning in close to Felon, not raising a hand to strike but shuffling back and forth, sizing the solider up. As he did this the other thugs started to move around the sides, circling Felon to get closer to the girl. Things were getting a little hot, and it was clear that Griger did not recognize the seriousness in Felon's threat, nor the danger of the situation.

"Let'm be, Lucas!" came a shout from the crowd, as a concerned villager tried to dispel the animosity. Griger shot a warning glare at the man, and then suddenly leaped forward, ramming into Felon's blade arm. The impact of the big man was enough to set Felon off balance for a second, solider or no, and the lumberjack took that chance to brush past him and make a grab for the girl, with surprising speed for one so heavy.
