It seems George Orwell wrote about the wrong country.
Ironically the country Orwell wrote about in "1984" though set in Britain was called "Oceania" which is in fact the same name for the region of the world where Australia is located (includes New Zealand, Tazmania and so on).

South Australia, not the whole of Australia.
This is true. When they say "Australia bans something" they actually mean "South australia bans something and the rest of australia doesn't give a damn."

oh we give a damn cos its like a virus it starts in one state that isnt big enough to really object to it and then move to the others

also the rules keep being implemented by locations the rest of australia cant do shit about the only way to get rid of someone like atkinson is to have a fuckload of people move to his town and vote him out

although i dont actually see this as a terribly bad thing but seriously aside from porn covers theres nothing bad on the cover 98% of the time anyways

although when they say covered does it mean what they do for porn just put black plastic over it with the name on or actually replace the cover with black with the name on it

http://img.affenheimtheater.de/fight_club_bd_02.jpg

i mean thats the current cover of fight clubs 10th aniversary edition and the back just has fightclub written on a bar of soap

there is nothing there at all the could possible be considered offensive

Yeah, all you get is the entire country going batshit crazy when the breast of a woman is shown on TV. :)
On the other hand at least they DID show a breast on TV... glass half full an all.

Well, that was rude.

I live in America too, but I sympathize with the Australians.
its ironic tho cos america has some primo stuff like this to

like the fact you arent allowed to show nude people on public television or extreme violence sure thats why everyone has cable but it doesnt change the fact that those laws exsist
we have the unlucky ability that we have a extreme douche(atkinson) that so high in the medias arse right now that everything gets put up on the world stage for some stupid ass reason

im not picking a fight cos some of my good friends are americans but sometimes you can be super hypocritical

IE last weeks you cant give chicken to a guy from west indes at a cricket match between australia and west indes ad is racist thing he has a 50% chance of offering chicken to either an australian supporter or a west indes supporter

and i bet americas ads about rice have asian people in them how is that not racist i like rice to does that make me asian???

also reading the aritcle points out

"The rule will apply to titles for sale or rent unless those titles are quarantined from all other audiovisual materials, in an area signposted with a warning." so they dont really have to do it at all just have a shelf or R18+

Australia includes Tasmania. The equivalent of this thread is if somewhere slightly more populated than the island of Tasmania, such as a small US state like say, Alaska decided to replace all the R18+ covers with Blanks. It's not a big deal, we can still go out and get drunk and do every other responsibly legal thing by the time we reach 18.

Oh, so you mean the only thing ironic about this situation is that people who don't understand irony are attempting to be ironic? Seriously, no line of that song contains actual irony, just contrived circumstance.

In all honesty, this law is more silly than worth getting upset over. Some people renting R18+ material are going to have to do a little more research before hiring a video, but otherwise, it doesn't make that much difference. It shows what would happen if an extremely conservative American got to be a State's Attorney General and chose to try and impose their morality on a wider population, it's ridiculous because it doesn't represent how many people don't care. Thankfully this idiot should be up for election this year and has annoyed too many voters.

Wow, this just keeps getting worse; next thing you know, every house in Australia is going to be equipped with a Telescreen.

This is rediculous. Isn't Atkinson the same guy who's always going on against video games? I'm glad Canada doesn't have a Looney Toon like him and Jack Thompson. Yech.
Actually Jack Thompson isn't that bad. Atkinson....he's a *****.

"Several distributors expressed surprise at the announcement of the law coming into effect, saying they had learned of it only yesterday. Potential Films managing director Mark Spratt, who has distributed numerous R-rated titles, including the contentious French drama Romance, said he was "gobsmacked"."
That word makes me giggle inside. :D

You could see it that, way, yes - but then, some smartass asshole like me tells you that
a) it was unintentional and therefore no achievement whatsoever
and b) about 80% of all non-American broadcasters show breasts on a daily basis without the countries descending into chaos.
