Nationalism or Patriotism...

The first was considered a bad word, which is why they don't like using politically cause the old folk still remember fighting nationalistic China during the Vietnam era. So they call all patriotism, though it is the same BS that is nationalism! All to hide the fact they are racist, bigots who think their nation of choice can do no wrong even when it is dropping napalm on people. True patriots want what is best for thier nation and understand droping napalm on people is just going to make your country look bad in the long run.

Blind support is all the politicians want though, that is why they love their racists though they can't come out and say it. These people can always be relied on to support your orders to drop bombs on brown people. That we have become so westernized that these same bigots are claiming to be patriots while telling people to 'love it or *removed* off' just disgusts me.

Ironic a little, these people using the day we first colonized Australian soil as a excuse to beat up on people who immigrated or are two or third generation removed from immigrants.

As for the day, never thought much on it. Personally I think it should have less significants, yes it is the day white people stepped foot on this rock but there are much more important dates out there which are not remembered. How about the day we actually became a nation in our own rights? That isn't given any special holiday, not even mentioned at all except for the 100 year mark....

I guess it is nicer then Christmas or Easter though, national holidays should NOT have religious significance if they are secular states. Australia is a secular state, so why the hell do we give religious holidays government support? Personally I still want to beat the idiots who are calling for the removal of Anzac day as a holiday. yeah, lets make it so only Christian religious dates should be holidays, thats not going to piss people off.

A dragon from Tully, North Queensland. Yes, the same Tully that had the first ever crop circle.

Agreed... the fact we changed it from the sunshine state sort of proves that point.

Australia day doesn't make racists it only highlights the racists for who they are; but because of this association with the flag and racism I will keep my flag waving to a minimum. Sad that a bunch of drunken yobbos have to ruin the flag for the rest of us.
^This.

In my experience, most people just celebrate the day by having a party and few drinks and watching the cricket. They just lay back and take it easy, which is truly what being an Aussie is all about.

That and watching the cricket.

EDIT: Oh, and the tennis.

I've got a shirt with an Aboriginal flag on it and the caption "If you don't love it, leave." just to piss Aussies off. I can't stand patriots. I won't even refer to it as "Australia Day". It's Invasion Day.

Well don't fuck them then. And don't make posts that are easily quoted out of context.

I am however intrigued at what 'Australia Day' is...

Edit: Aaah, it's a celebration of the day the British colonised Australia. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_Day]

Happy now? And yes, which is the main irony of these racist claims that all "foreigners" should leave.

Apparently there was "racially inspired violence" at the Australian Open today. Australia day isn't looking that great from my perspective and I'm the whitest guy you'll ever find.

I think thats going a bit far. Yes, our country was founded on virtually wiping out another civilization, but name another country that wasn't. Yes over zealous patriotism sucks, but you shouldn't respond with "My country is teh suck" either, there are a lot of good things about this country and you shouldn't let a minority of ignorant racists masquerading as patriots ruin it for you.

Not only that, but [in reference to Invasion Day] you have to look at it objectively, in the time there was nothing wrong with shooting the natives and bringing smallpox, alcohol, rats and god to them.

Its impossible and unfair to judge long past actions by todays standards.

This might surprise you
at my school last year the aborignal students made a muiral on this brick wall we have out on the basketball court....5 daus later it was tagged with AUSSIE PRIDE and WHITE POWER....that was not a fun week at school it was basically white vs blacks
kids are fucking retarded
Nope. Where I work is a multi-cultural hub with Middle-Easterners, Asian, Indians, ect. And I've been white blokes scream out racists slurs because these "foreign cunts" got served first. I've been abused about it. The fact that a sporting event went sour, doesn't surprise me. Nor does that thing at your school. It saddens me to know that the country that "prides" (I use that term with irony) on being a cultural mixing ground has such closed-minded people who believe that you should be like them or get out. I find the "Fuck off we're full" stickers highly offensive too.

I'll join you in the beating. ANZAC day is way more important than Christmas and Easter.

Yessss ... some of us give the rest of us a bad name.

Though I would like to point out that the so-called "racially inspired violence" at the Australian Open was in facts Slavs and Bosnians having it out at each other.

See, that's a major issue - when folks who have immigrated here decide that in addition to bringing aspects of their culture - which is absolutely fine - also decide to bring cultural baggage ala their little national rivalries.

I don't care about the injustices done to Palestines by Jews here - the Jews here aren't the ones doing the killing, you leave them the fuck alone. The Iraqis here aren't the ones ambushing our boys over there - you leave them the fuck alone.

Well, that is rather un-Australian - it's quite delicious.

So, lol Sunshine Coast? Isn't that the sole area in qld attempting to institute daylight savings with no regard for the actual practiticality of it?

=================================================================

I have a suggestion. Instead of celebrating by way of beer and bat, celebrate by way of booty - the one sure thing that all Australians can claim affinity for. Make love, not race riots.

Im aussie and im an asian aussie, and I don't hear "This country is great, get white, get aussie or get the fuck out".
And i don't like lamb either but that's probably due to the fact I've only had lamb about 3 times in my life.
I see Australia day's purpose to be about celebrating whats great about Australia but:
1. Kylie can go fuck herself.
2.Pavlova feels strange when i eat it.
3.I don't like lammingtons.
So the only thing I can celebrate are BBQs and fireworks down at Carss Park.
