Are they your resident nutjobs? Every country has those. :)
They are our equivalent to the Democrat's if i remember correctly and Liberal being the equivalent of the Republicans.
So you don't like liberals? I don't get what you mean.

Republicans are our conservative party and Democrats are the liberal party, just to clarify.

Liberal Party of Australia is the name of the Center-right Party down here, while Australian Labour party is Center-left.

Labour being the current party in Power and thus the ones screwing everything up atm.

I think that you may have it backwards, but can you please explain to me how that party works.
Edit: Ninja'd ignore my post.

Liberal is the center-right and Labor is the centre with only a pinch of right. They are as Left Wing as the National Socialist party were socialist (well not that extreme)

So I ask you, what makes your government so insane?
We're a bunch of ex-convicts who took control because we were bored. What else do you expect? We don't know what we're doing. Most of us aren't even paying attention. Do you know how dangerous this country is? We're just trying to stay alive long enough to propagate the species, all that stuff about "rights", "laws" and "politics" and especially those laughable old fairytale chestnuts "left" and "right" are a bunch of fancy nonsense talk that we figure we'll get to at some point down the track after we figure out how to keep the brown snakes out of our backyards.

Australia is where the world was Beta-tested. For example, all the animals that didn't make the cut can still be found there(See the Platypus). It only makes sense that since Australia never closed down after the rest of the world was released and is still running on old code that it's political system has some bugs.
Thanks a bunch, I just went into a coughing fit from laughing so damn hard at that.

As it has been said before, no one pays any attention except with the crazy shit because that's the only stuff that makes the news. But we're not as insane as every one thinks. For example, Senator Xenephon is trying to launch a Senate enquiry into Scientology prompting Rudd to also look at a Parliamentary inquiry which at the least would question the Church's tax exempt status. Have any of you across the Oceans heard about that?

We're pretty quiet and unnoticed, but that will make it all the more surprising when we take over. When Australian missiles rain down upon your cities and Australian soldiers eat your dogs, you'll be saying "geez, I wish we paid more attention!"

To Maxieon: those are just the party names it's not the liberal it's the Liberal and the Labor party (which by the by should be labour with the 'u' but they're kinda weird like that), but the Liberals are a more conservative party.

Also if anyone has seen the show The Hollowmen (it was on the abc that's A for Australian in this case) that's a pretty decent explanation of what's wrong with our politics here (essentially we're real big on image).

This may surprise you (though I somehow doubt it will), we only hear about the batshit insane conervative or the "I've been heavily smoking weed for 40 years" braindead hippy liberal Americans. From across the pacific, it doesn't look like you guys have any middle ground.
Actually, that's pretty much all we've got. There's really no middle ground anywhere in the current US government (well, aside from the rare exception who can never actually get anything done).

It's not Insane, you simply only hear about the insane things... what them being newsworthy.
I agree
Same goes both ways. All I ever hear about the American Government is how they ****ed it in Iraq. Again, and again, and again.
Although, I haven't heard anything recently. Maybe they're doing things right?!
And, what do you know, another one ignorant of the all-new Religion and Politics thread.

I would probably get given some sort of probation or suspension if I came up with anything to get back at this.
I KNOW HOW TO GET LFD2 UNCENSORED! IN AUSTRALIA! HA, TAKE THAT AMERICA'S VIOLENCE!

Whats not to love about our Government? Some parliament members are suspected murders and have been question IN parliament.
Australia is badarse. Nuff said.
To be badarse you have to be like the Taiwanese government!. I mean, anything not bolted down to the ground becomes a projectile and they have hardcore brawls over there. Australia, while quirky, is not that steeped in chaos. It reminds me of that Danny Bhoy joke about Australian Question Time..

We have conserative "right" and conserative "left", there is no diffrence in what they do however, only what they say they will do.

To be fair there is a difference, Liberals go about building a huge surplus and getting us out of debt that the Labor party leaves them with then Labor gets back in and promptly spends everything and then some. (although to be fair they don't always make stupid decisions with the money like when they made uni entry free that would have been awesome)

Well that sucks, because I really want to move there. It would make me feel really shit if I couldn't, like, seriously shit.

Anyway, from what I've heard, most insane comments come from a small but vocal part of the government. Like only óne Attorney General is against an 18+ rating, and he's the only guy you'll hear about, not all the others who want to go ahead with it.

maybe it has something to do with drinking at 18 (legally) and the our low punishment for under age drinking.

On a serious note though, Australia is unlike any other country (save for Antarctica) in it's isolation. The only country that is there to keep it company is New Zealand and while that is a remarkable country in it's own right, it's just a smaller version of Australia..with more sheep. So, you would expect Australia to have it's own weird laws PLUS Australians are also sitting on a really really big pile of Uranium, especially in Tasmania..which kinda explains a lot about Tasmania.
lol it's true

The Australian government are all fools.

Australia will probably be the first country to overthrow their government for incompetence and sheer crushing weight of bad choices. That will be interesting to watch.

The odd thing is how many people support some of the politicians who make bad choices.
