"Research indicates violent video games lead to increased aggression in youth" - SOURCE PLEASE

You know what else does that to a significantly higher degree? Team sports. And yet, you never hear ANYONE going on about how we should ban sports, despite the fact that FAR more young people have been either injured, or even KILLED, playing them. Furthermore, any "link" between video games and violent crimes that has ever been made has always been PURELY circumstantial - hm, that kid shot up his school? Oh, he played video games, did he? Well, that's certaintly something that seems "fringe" and anti-mainstream, this MUST be what caused the violent behaviour.

I just don't know what to say to this..... I suppose this is what happens when a new medium gains popularity. People are scared of it, and they figure that THIS must be the cause of society's troubles; it's a pathetic attempt at scapegoating, and it demonstrates profound ignorance on the part of the protestors.
I agree. All those kids beating the ever loving shit out of each other on the playground becuase of football (soccer) matches go completely unnoticed!

Also a Christian group? Too fucking easy. Just no.

Research shows that increased playing of violent first person shooter games can significantly increase aggression," the group said.
Research shows that religious groups trying to force others to live by their standards can also significantly increase aggression. Driving can cause aggression. Sports can cause aggression (seen the way some people behave at sporting events?). Do we ban those too?

And the world would then end, i suppose. With kids these days having to worry about bullying, sexual harassment, sexual predators, peer pressure, etc. What damage are a few games going to do?

Hmmm, well this comes down to the lack of political activism yet again. Truthfully I think the big issue here is not about who votes and who doesn't, but who actually takes action and provides resources. A Christian Group can raise money (as your seeing), in general gamers are not so organized, or generous with their funds towards a message. Nor are the game companies should should be more directly involved in this mess.

As far as how much support he has goes, I would question ABC's judgement if it's literally true that he is the only goverment official preventing this rating, which is how things are presented frequently.

I like how they are like even if R18+ games ar sold to adults they will inevitably(sp) find there way to kids, so no R18+ plus rating, ok, with that same logic prescription medication for sick people will ineviteably find there way to people who will use them illegaly, so does that mean no mediction for sick people?

I think groups like these are actually concerned about the issue of video game violence and its possible effects on not only children but all people.

It's well meaning but ultimately an endorsement of censorship for a medium that in Australia is treated differently to others. The odd thing is that the R18+ label will be applied to more titles and help the industry and parents keep them out of the hands of children.

It's unusual how many people will support soldiers, who at 16 (or 18 in Australia?) are able to be trained to kill and actually go and kill people in the real world. I see no condemnation of that despite the fact that it is a direct breach of one of the ten commandments.

Video games are an easy target for older generations to explain behaviour they do not like, much like rock and roll, movies and even books. The fact is that children have always been unruly and probably always will be. The key is responsible parenting. You can't hide your children from the world, they will have to face the same things as we do later on, it's all about preparing them for that.

The key is education for the parents, teach them how to use technology, how to restrict play time and inappropriate titles. Like in law, ignorance is no excuse, get involved, understand what games are and what they mean to children.

These groups need to stop demonising and start listening, they might actually learn something then.
