I live in a small town with 1 IGA (1.5km walk each way to/from home), 5 bars/hotels, 1 RSL, 1 Chinese takeaway, 2 banks (ANZ, Commonwealth), railway that forms the rough centreline of the town, and a 40-50km drive into Wagga if I want a Big Mac, hit DSE, or watch a movie at the cinema.
And yet for as crappy and small this town is, I seem to get one of the best net connections mentioned in this thread so far. DAMN!

Why the hell do we have a download limit, unlike those lucky koreans or canadians...WHY does our internet suck!!!
Technically, all the major providers have caps here in Canada, or at least in Ontario (regardless whether you mean total caps or throttling).

I use a company that buys bandwidth wholesale from the majors and sells it for WAY better offers. (I use Teksavvy - cable if other Canadians are interested)

I get a max of around 1.5Mb/s averaging around a 1Mb/s if it's a good connection (Steam, Xbox Live, healthy torrent etc). It's a 10mbps down/1mbps up for about 50 bucks a month with a hilariously huge 300Gb cap. I have had some HEAVY months and never gone over.

I would seriously recommend Teksavvy to anyone sick of Bell or Rogers horrible service/value (the major providers in Ontario). Great rates, and good customer service.

Well,, my download should be 40 MB/s but I only get about 2-3 MB/s /troll
I suppose it's only fair, had shitty internet for 10 years before, around 300 KB/s
I live in the Netherlands, And in UK I've got a max of 30 MB, and in the USA I got about 25, I think. A connection in Amsterdam is at it's best. 40 MB/s :D (I only get 2-3, but I am happy with that. It's like a silver egg laying chicken and a gold egg laying chicken. I'd take my silver and be happy, ty very much)

so, in other words, it won't matter to you much if they block some websites?

and no, the companies near my house are actually quite good about that stuff

speed will be seem trivial once your government gets their censorship hooks in your content.

To be fair, the internet connection I had at an Australian university ranks the best I've ever experienced in 3 countries, superior, naturally to boradband2 on a good local ISP (iiNet) and with a terrible ISP (Telstra Bigpond), as well as being superior to the net in various places across Japan and Korea (the Korean intranet however is miles ahead of anything else). A sat connection accessed from down under ranked pretty highly too. Just goes to show that ultimately, its censorship, filtering, throttling, sharing and plain ol' distance that has more influence than anything else.

Browsing through some of the topics I realised that I don't seem to be the only Aussie with shit internet speeds.

I run ADSL 2+, that's supposed to be pretty damn fast. My computer is connected to my brand new $200 Belkin Modem/Router via an ethernet cable.

Want to know my max download speed? 200kbs...And it doesn't pass about 5kbs during peak hours (4-10pm) (Internet speed tests show that my net runs at about 1.4mbps (during early morning or late at night), the minimum is supposed to be 1.5)

Is it just me or is the internet standard really poor in Australia?

I called my ISP (Optus) and I was told I will never have a speed faster than an average of 70-100kbs because I'm too far from the connection (Approx 7km)

I live in a developed and populated area as yet I'm told anyone that lives outside of 5km from the connection will not get the speed they are paying for but we have to use that connection because its the only one.

I really want to know, does anyone in The US or UK live on the edge of their connections and what your max download speed is?

Also, anyone in Aus, I'd like to hear what your net speed is like.

***{[I am not great with things regarding the internet and speeds, if anyone has tips on making my net faster it would be greatly appreciated, Optus refused to do anything. Also, if I have made an incorrect statement feel free to correct me]}***
I'm on a 1.5Mb connection and down speeds top out at 150K, I'm in a small country town.
Can't hurt to call other ISPs to get some numbers? I can't get any better where I'm at and I know a dude 10kms away whose up/down rates are 5x faster, feel your pain my friend.

When i came to Australia it was my first time when i heard the words "Download limit and cap" X_X

It really is amazing how advanced Australia is compared to most other countries in the world. And yet the internet is just.....retarded and lame!

Yeah, it's pretty shoddy at the moment.

On the other hand, the national broadband network has just gotten the go ahead, finally, in the face of alot of opposition of the "it won't be perfect, so we should do nothing instead" variety. Things are going to improve.
idk, you Gov. does like cencorship... maybe you never will haha

Man, I'm 700 metre from my junction and I can't even get ADSL2+! I live on north Melbourne too, it's not like it's fucking out in the middle of nowhere. The worst part is that my mate down the street had ADSL2+, yet I can't get it. Damn IInet having awesome deals but shit coverage.

So yeah, I've got ADSL1 and my speed never really peaks over 500kbps.
