The story was just a rehash of a Disney classic with a new skin. Granted the skin is incredibly well animated and nicely put together its nothing new.
Well, first of all, I didn't think that the the film was much of a classic myself, then again, that's just my opinion. Anyway, the film was essentially completely mapped out concept wise before Pocahontas was released, and pre-production began less than a year afterward. Hardly enough time to completely script a film. James Cameron came up with, first wrote down and expanded upon the film idea when he was 15, in 1970, way before Dances with Wolves or Ferngully.
I'm of the opinion anyway that the origins of the plot don't matter as long as the film in question is entertaining, which is what I go to see films for at the most basic level, to be entertained. As far as entertainment goes, Avatar is pretty bloody entertaining, at least for me.

As for a not so great decade... Lord of the Rings. Star Wars. Watchmen. Distric 9. Cloverfield. 28 days/weeks later. Crank 1&2. 300... and sooooooo many more. I think the decade had a FANTASTIC bunch of movies. Sure there were some totally rediculus ones but what decade doesn't have its fair share of crap?
Actually, I was talking more in a general events of all sorts spectrum, not exclusively film. Film was pretty good actually this decade. Better than the 90's on a whole.
