It was only a matter of time.

My thoughts?

Decent movie, really wasn't all that special. Yes it had nice effects but, seriously? that is not what makes a movie 'all that' I'm afraid.

Lord of the Rings was a well directed movie, with far more epic battles and a decent storyline from Tolkien. That was a good movie!

othing like a highest grossing film of all time that most people don't want to see a 2ed time, insist it's only worth watching in 3D on a huge screen, & will age poorly. Once again, quantity of movey wins over quality of film.

I'm used to unoriginality, I don't even believe in originality. I hated this movie because it encourages Furry artists on DeviantArt to make things I can't unsee, & I like good old-fashioned cell animation. I'm also sick of everything needing to be "hardcore" & the graphics & special effects being more important than anything else.

Add all that together (except the animation parts) & you also have my opinion of The Matrix.

The reason I hate it is because there was so much wasted potential. You get all the special effects to together and a fleshed out world and what? Space Indians? C'mon seriously?

Well good, even if Avatar isn't the best film ever, it's sure as hell better than Titanic.
Agreed. It was pretty, but I don't see why people care so much. But topping Titanic makes me like it.

I'd just like to add onto the first point you made about the Batman quote and say that they made this from scratch whereas they already had characters laid out for Batman, not only because it was a sequel...but because it was freakin' Batman. Everything was superb in Avatar...everything. Except for the fact that the helicopter pilot wasn't wearing a oxygen mask while she was flying even though the cabinet was open....Unless they somehow figured out how to pressurize and what not in the helicopter with the doors wide open.

But yeah, we can argue this 'till the cows come home.
It's common knowledge that spending so much in the magnetic fields of the Hallelujah mountains, may result in mutation of the lungs.
Ah yes, of course, of course. How could I have forgotten? =P

You know, someone has got to write something about how Avatar's high sales reflect the need of the people for "the escapism" that films give during difficult times (economic depression, anyone? everyone?)

I won't, I'm lazy. But still, I figure that decades from now, people will point at this time in film and go - Avatar: best film for pure escapism at a time when the people really needed it = massive sales.

The world of Pandora is easily the most fleshed-out fictional environment ever created for a film. The sheer level of detail in the movie makes Batman cry.
What about all the other science fiction that came before Avatar, like, Star Wars / Trek, Dune, 2001, etc?

Clearly they were nowhere near as fleshed-out as cat people flying pterodactyls...
I didn't know Star Trek, 2001 and Dune were created for films! Gee, I thought they had TV shows and books first... wow, is my face red.

:p
You compared Avatar to Batman, and you know how batty I get about that kind of thinking...

But if I must provide more appropriate examples, then: Metropolis, Oldboy, Logan's Run, Blade Runner, Planet of the Apes, THX-1138, Tron. Are you really going to tell me James Cameron created a world on-par with friggin' TRON?

Edit: Nevermind about Blade Runner. I forgot that one had a book first.

Yeah, well its got nothing on the Dark Knight in terms of acting, script, character and ... well basically everything except visual effects.

The world's become a population of graphics whores!

Nothing makes Batman cry!

OT, well joy another mediocre over hyped film topping the box office again.

I will beat Avatar. For my next movie, I will remake Little Red Riding Hood and drag it out over 2 hours and give it top-o-the-art graphics. Also, it will feature A) A gritty reboot or B) A cheesy, out-of-place romance including one or more jonas brother.

I was expecting the film to flop, actually. I was very skeptical of it before I saw it. Then I actually saw it:

And now, I do not disapprove of this news.

I really enjoyed the movie. Yes, at times it was a bit cliche but the world that they managed to create kept me enthralled through the entire 3 hours. So yeah I think it can be argued that while the script could use some work the visual reality they managed to create is unlike anything anyone has ever seen. Especially in 3D.

I think you can say that this movie is the Star Wars of its time. Think about it, Star Wars' plot was something that had been done before, but it was presented in a way that managed to suck people in and make them care about the characters and the world they live in. I'm sure someone could write a book on comparisons but the point is that Cameron managed to tell a story and create a world that captured the imaginations of millions of people just like A New Hope did back in 1977.

The rumor is that Cameron has 2 sequels planned. If the story tightens up a bit, not only can I enjoy an eyegasm but I can also connect with the characters a bit more. Here's hoping Avatar 2 will be the comparable to The Empire Strikes Back. :)
If only that doesn't mean that we'll get a series of disappointing prequels.

Well, I liked the Star Wars prequels, but they didn't enthral me like the original trilogy did. It helped that Episode 1 was the first Star Wars series I saw, so I wasn't already spoiled by the originals.

That's not the case for Avatar, of course. Now I am spoiled, so I hope I won't be disappointed.
