Goes to show all of that advertising is really paying off.

Or people just love to see mechs take on smurfs.

Either way, the movie is awesome.

I went in to see Avatar. 1 hour later I walked out. Fuck that shit.
Great post. Even better reasoning of why Avatar sucks. Considering you bailed 1/3 of the way into the film, probably not the brightest idea you've ever had. Then again, you're probably just trolling.
wow the first hour is the explaining part and the stroy really comes up in the rest you ass one of the best bits is end as in all films get it

as for a sequel maybe a power struggle between the desendent of tes'tuh and jake while a sub-plot of selfridge learning their ways in the backround through his own avatar but jake finds out as the desendest gave the green light to selfridge and jake doesnt want this and it turns into a shitfuck as well or something

I was reading somewhere that this movie was influenced by that anime cartoon on a kids network.

Great, I hope they donate the amount of money the film cost to starving children or something. Christ, movies like The Signal or Paranormal Activity manage to look professional without having to spend millions. Why can't you, Cameron? Terminator wasn't that expensive, either, go that route again!

Avatar, the Last AirBender? Got sued for the right to use the name. That's why when that movie comes out, it's only going to be known as "The last Air Bender" only. No Avatar. But the two movies are VERY far from each other in terms of plot, pacing and main message.

3D movies haven't been around long enough to make such a claim that they don't age well, and even less of the new 3d movies are actually decent (My Bloody Valentine etc). And I'd disagree with T2 and Titanic. T2 is just a rerun of T1 (Still great though), just with a bigger budget, and Titanic is a good movie, but essentially just another tragic romance. Sure Avatar can be compared to many other films such as Dancing with Wolves, or Pocahontas, but it still holds it own with the sci-fi element of it (The connection to the planet), and also raises the bar for future cinema as the CGI seems to have broken the barrier of unrealistic.
Not necessarily. T2 is a rare example of a movie that took a concept and ran with it. Sarah Conner became Badass mom where in the first one she's more of a wuss that needed to be protected. A woman takes up for herself and it expanded a LOT of the Terminator mythos while making John Conner a confused boy that has to grow up rather quickly. All in all, I preferred T2 to what T1 is offering.

I'll give you Titanic because damnit... That whole deal with the tragic romance reminds me too much of Leo's Romeo and Juliet and I can't take him seriously. He cries too much.

But I highly, HIGHLY doubt that he raises the bar within the sci-fi community. Serenity has done a lot. He uses a lot of graphix to cover the fact that the story seemed rather simplistic. Around the middle, I could begin to surmise what was happening. That's not good storytelling, that's copying. And it was to my dismay that one tentative grasp is made to make this seem to be a better movie (namely the connection to the planet). The fact remains that we've seen this in better offerings. Namely "The Last Samurai" or even "Hero". I had a nice time watching it. I won't deny that. But CGI shouldn't be used as the main basis for storytelling. A movie should be able to stand on its own two feet, which I believe Avatar doesn't really do. It takes elements from Cameron's (as well as other movies) as more an expensive rehash.

If anything, I would have liked to see more of either earth or the Na'Vi world. More of the interaction with the civilian life rather than the scientists as the main voice of reason. I also wanted to see the damn MacGuffin used one time. What is it about the Unobtanium that's so great other than price? Power up one space rock for me and let me see. As it stands, we're shown the world, we're shown two sides, and Mother Earth picked one.

Ferngully
Dances with Wolves
The Last Samurai

I saw these. I understand the message. But it's lost if you lose me along the way. The Deus Ex Machina moment really made me just go *sigh*

The reason for the rpice is the over-rated salaries of CGI animators. remember that 1 scene in Superman Returns that costed 2 mil just for a shot of a bullet breaking in SM`s eye? Thats ridiculous.

But avatar was AWESOME! Its been long time since i got so involved in a movie. It was amazing.

As a person hoping to get into CG animation, screw off. Animators get paid dirt wages. Most people really don't realize hw much making proper movies cost. Paranormal activity and signal only worked because they relied on gimmicks, and all movies can't do that. Lawrence of arabia filmed like PA? bullshit.

Most of the money goes to

A: Paying generally pretty large crews (and in FX movies massive animation teams) union wages over the course of the several years it takes to make a movie.

B: Equipment is very expensive, a camera that looks nice when played back on your SD TV will not look nice on a film screen. High quality camera's typically cost around 250K a pop and are usually rented by the day. Production level films can have up to 12 in use.

Avatar itself developed brandnew technology. Mocap is fucking expensive, and studio time, lights sound gear ect can all rack up the millions. Many films also have massive travel expenses and set budgets. Remember The Two Towers? Remember how they had to build a real 1/3 scale hemp deep in a mining quarry? Yeah.

I guess that's the second (blockbuster) movie in a row Cameron makes that has had word of mouth good enough to generate consistent tickets.

Just like Titanic. Which I saw several times. Because of my girlfriend. And that word of mouth.

Good for Cameron.

I honestly do think that Avatar deserves a lot of the praise it gets, so I'm glad it didn't end up being a flop. It's rare to see a movie with such a huge budget that still has a level of heart about it.

From what I hear, it's pretty, but marred by a generic storyline, with a great bit fat Iraq war reference in the middle and some awful dialogue.

More importantly, it's 2 hrs and 45 minutes long. I'm not sitting in my cinema for that long, it's too uncomfortable.

Wow ... I wish I had money like that. Hopefully James Cameron wont ruin this great movie by using the money to make a mediocre sequel
You mean he won't do a Lucas?

Dude ur talkin about a director who after Titanic pretty much didnt do anything for years. And since titanic is the best selling movie of all time that should speak in volumes about the guy.
i personally think he is crazy not to cash in on his fame back in the day but oh well....
He actually used the time he had to do 2 documentaries, "Aliens of the Deep" and "Ghost of the Abyss" (both are good and have a nice home on my DVD shelf). He used both of these documentaries to help develop the camera that was going to be used to shoot Avatar.

It took about 4 years to make because they had to actually invent the technology to shoot the film. The sequels should not take as long to make because the technology and the some of the CG characters are already there. That's how he convinced the studio to pump so much money into the first one by ensuring them the sequels can be made quicker.

Heres a neat vid about the camera and it doesn't even scratch the surface of the other types of tech they had to create for this project. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2squ9HDuBeI

To be honest, in general, the idea to Avatar was worn out, and this movie does nothing to breathe new life into the plot. Also, the characters were the same cardboard cut outs, the military Duke Nukem type, the prick CEO type, the environmentalists, the flawed marine and so on...

Then you have the fact for the first two hours, the film does very little to advance the plot other than explain a fuck ton of uses for USB 4.0.

And I enjoyed one film this year, Taking of Phelam 123.
