I think word of mouth will help this one out a lot. i was skeptical as hell about this flick but thoroughly enjoyed myself. Plot was a bit predictable but the visuals, especially in 3D, sets this film apart from anything else out there.

About a forth into the movie I actually forgot I was watching something that was completely created in a computer. Films like Beowulf and The Polar Express have tried to capture lifelike performances but there has always been something about it that reminds me I'm watching CG. Avatar was, for me, the first film to actually cross that barrier.
Agreed. It completely crossed the Uncanny Valley - at least, for me personally.
Actually, looking back at it, I guess the same goes with me, albeit probably a little less. Especially when we had a little "action" going on, if ya know what I mean. Though I did have a little "aww" moment in that scene.

The movie wasn't that great. Sure, it was a good movie and everybody should see it, but it's just a wasted potential. I had many problems with this movie and while watching i had to should ''WTF is this? Why are they doing this? Why is this guy even allowed to be here? Is he retarded?''
I wanted to punch the guy who got in to the avatar, then stud up and started wailing hes tail around and people wanted to drug him. For gods sakes, your a marine that's in a billion worth avatar, start being serious, stop endangering other life's. This an important mission god dammit! And when you see flowers, don't go away from your crew to get killed by wild beasts!

Wew, that's a relief. If an innovative title like this can make money, it will mean that other risky titles will have a better chance of getting made.

hmmm impressive :)

I must protest though this movie was good but it wasn't anything special to me.
However it was the most visually jaw dropping movie I've seen yet so kudos to the film crew.

Eh-hem.

Good job James Cameron. I say he deserved more than his money back. That movie was pretty good.

whats the difference between the 18 rated version and the 12 rated version
There's an 18 rated version? I'm assuming you'll see some blue boobs and possibly blue blood.
Is there an 18 rated version?

Those "hating" on Avatar, are you either idiots? Or do you just want to point out the absolute obvious? I think everyone could tell that the plot was cliche, it stunk to high heavens of cliche, but the atmosphere, the graphics, the world, Pandora, you were sucked into it because it was so beautiful and engaging of all your senses, you didn't want to leave.

So if you're going to say that the graphics were amazing(which they were)but the plot has been done before and is cliche, then no shit sherlock, tell us something we don't know.

I saw it in 3D myself and was positively blown away, didn't care that I knew what would pretty much happen, I was lost in the movie all the way through.

Gameplay is more important than graphics!

Err

Uhh

Skilled writing and a solid plot are more important that visuals!

Same rant tbh, just different media. The only reason this movie did well was because of how easily people are distracted by shiny objects. "oooh look at the pretty pictures." Oh well, such is film making these days. A solid plot and a great script get completely ejected in favor of putting on a visual spectacle.

The sequel is going to be quite obvious and will capitalize on the success of this film and Sherlock Holmes. It'll be AVATAR 2: The Great Catnip Caper! In which the RDA introduces a highly addictive substance to the local population, making them mere drug slaves! To help combat this problem, Jake Sully's human friends will venture back to Earth to retrieve Sherlock Holmes' body and deage him with mystical Eywa magic so that he can solve the crime and save the world! again. It'll also have cameos by Arnold Shwartzeneggar as the tough, super-soldier Na'vi warrior and Leonardo DiCarprio as the hard-hitting investigative reporter who falls in love with Pandora and helps to sway public opinion agains the RDA.

i saw this movie twice in 3d and was blown away both times. There is two things wrong with the film the main navi charthers are too sterotyped and the story is a too familiar but the way the story is told and is presented to us in the mist of the amazing visuls makes for a truly fantastic film experencice. a must see in the cimema

oh yeah the underling message if they wont wont give blow them up is so true to our history and wars eg the indains, iraq, etc that is what the film is saying you cant deny that. as well as the way jakes falls for the nature culture of the navi showing that there is more to life than money and materistic welth that happyness and blonging are the most wanted

the toughts of a sequel however while i wound like to go back to pandora again for 2 more hrs the story would need to be of the wall bonkers or something to push the charters foward.
possibles storiesi would like to see

1) if it was something like nateryi learns the human ways to become a better hunter while the clan is in a power struggle over tes'tu dying and so forth. also the clan is rebuilding their home. while a backround story possibly parker selfridge gets an avatar to learn where he went wrong the first time on pandora and wants to show the navi why we need the unobtanium or something.

(To James Cameron
if this story cropes up in a sequel i flipping called it first)

forgive my terrible spelling im too lazy to cheak it

Double post? Yes. As for the story, what story is original nowadays? Even the original Star Wars had a fairly cliched story. I'm prepared for the hate train, trust me. Star Wars was basically a story taken from classical literature, one of the Greco-Roman epics and transplanted into a futuristic setting. People went to see Star Wars for the spectacle, not because it had the best story in the world. Now people are saying that Star Wars has an amazing story, and it does (it just isn't original), mostly out of nostalgia. Avatar's story is familiar, but it's presented in a way that's similar to the original Star Wars. A believable world with characters and settings that simply work.

I'm not surprised at all. To explain: I know this movie made more to produce than some countries make in a year, but James Cameron's had this idea floating around in his head for at least 10 years. He's made Terminator, Aliens, and Titanic. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't commit to a project as enormous as this without knowing he'd find some way to make up the money it cost to produce Avatar.

That said, I actually still haven't seen this movie yet, but I will remedy that in a couple of days. Dragon Age Origins is taking up a lot of my time. [sub](STOP DISAPPROVING OF EVERYTHING WE DO, MORRIGAN, YOU'RE NOT HELPING.)[/sub]

Well I was thoroughly looking forward to Avatar and I saw it in 3D on the worlds largest screen (The IMAX in Sydney, it's in the book of Guiness world records) and I walked out just saying "Wow, wow that film was great". I mean sure the plot was predictable, the humans felt a bit cartoonishly evil and the main protagonist became the worlds largest hypocrite (Also there was this annoying fuckwit who didn't speak english that spent ten minutes answering his phone in the seat behind me!) but it had a good message, it's probably the most immersive film you'll ever see and it had that special James Cameron feel. Go see it...and Sherlock Holmes as well (I actually walked out of Sherlock Holmes saying "That was even a bit better than Avatar" and I feel that Avatar may overshadow Sherlock).

Good to see that in an era where the powers that be have began to assume that the audiences can only associate with A lister Americans appearing in predictable 90 minute action and or comedies. However a three hour epic, mainly focusing on romcance and the alternate cultures, with no big name in sight was an epic success.

Never said one was better than the other. OBVIOUSLY you(and I) would want to see a movie with a great and gripping story and equally as great visuals but for this movie that's not the case, so people should stop bitching and just accept it.

I'm not surprised. I was at the theater Saturday night (seeing Sherlock Holmes...loved it!) and there was a line-up for ALL Avatar showings there. No other movies had queues, just Avatar, and plenty of folks were in the line before and after we saw our movie.

I didn't see Avatar, doubt I will. Without dropping any spoilers, is it set up for any sort of sequel? With all the dough rolling in I'd be surprised if one wasn't already green-lit.
