Alright, fair enough, we can discuss movies before they are released. That said, why on earth can we not talk them after they are released? This particular question isn't one that could be discussed before release, and other than the hard facts released by a studio (director, producer, casting etc.), most other discussion regarding a movie before its release tends to be baseless speculation. We can't rant about desired changes to a movie until the movie in question comes out, is what I'm trying to say. So your statement that the time to discuss these things is before the movie is released is just silly.Luminous Chroma said:Read the entire post. I specifically mentioned people being upset about Ben Affleck's casting as Batman, which is a precise example of how we can discuss a movie before its release. Aside from that, people speculate endlessly on movies before they come out. I've seen hundreds of threads on the Escapist (not to mention IGN, Ain't It Cool, etc) about what people would like to see/are dreading in any yet-to-be-released film.Nemusus said:See, that's just silly. Avengers has been out for over a year now. If ever there was a time to rant about desired changes to a movie, wouldn't it have been BEFORE the release of said movie?

Oh most definitely she can act - but it's not a requirement for Black Widow. She (that is the Character of the Black Widow) is not going to be carrying any Marvel movie; as long as she looks good and the editing for any and all stunts are top notch (see: Iron Man 2 and Avengers battle scenes) the fans of the Marvel movies aren't going to care about her acting.BloatedGuppy said:She CAN act, though. Not that it's on display much in The Avengers, but she's actually a very competent actress when the script and direction allow for it. Before she was an "It Girl" getting "It Girl" roles she was a small move/indie darling, and her sexuality didn't exactly take center stage in films like Lost in Translation or Ghost World. I would run to hang an Oscar on her, but she's perfectly capable at her craft.Tono Makt said:Because Bewbs R Kewl.
I dunno. Too flippant, maybe, but my thoughts on the matter is that Scarlet is one of the most popular female actresses with the "Comic Book Nerds" online. Seriously, just look at the love she gets from geeks and geek sites online - it's creepy. Very few people care about her ability to act, they just care about her curves.

It's really bothered me so far.
With due respect, it's pretty silly to say that someone can master all of the things that her character is known to have mastered but draw the line at her having gone to see a voice coach. Although I do think that it would have been a nice touch if she had slipped into the Russian accent while she was alone with Hawkeye. It would have been a nice, clear demonstration of how she is more comfortable around him than any of the other characters in the movie.Tono Makt said:Because Bewbs R Kewl.

So my bet is that Whedon and the producers of The Avengers (and related movies, like Iron Man 2) decided to drop the idea of a Russian accent in favour of just having Scarlet in skintight leather outfits and know that anyone who dared object would be called "Gay" in very short order. (yeah, you better believe that if the Escapist didn't have moderators, someone would be posting something stupidly homophobic about you for saying anything back about Scarlet)
Essentially? You want something true to the character, while the target audience just wants to see a 40ft tall Scarlet in tight black leather.
Let's dispense with the name-calling, shall we? I'm silly, you're silly, thing on the Internet is silly. There, I've covered all the bases. On we go.Nemusus said:Alright, fair enough, we can discuss movies before they are released. That said, why on earth can we not talk them after they are released? I just think that it's a rather petty complaint to be making.Tono Makt said:Bewbs in Leather Outfit.
So with all due respect, what you and I might want from Black Widow, what you and I might find silly about where the line is drawn (Russian accent), but we're not the target audience. And the target audience is quite happy with Bewbs in a Leather Outfit being the Female Avenger.
