And maybe Primus. I am sure a bunch of people knew about them, but they kinda died out a while back, so this younger generation might not.
Dude, primus sucks!

Bands i know that are not known to the open public are basically obscure fusion-prog bands.
Phlox: http://www.myspace.com/phloxmkdk Listen to a few of the songs, might enjoy it. They are even better live.

Dayjob Orchestra, more known for their dubs of star trek on youtube. Their only album is up for grabs pro bono

Someone mentioned Mars Volta, are you kidding me? Almost everyone i know has heard of it.
The younger generation might not know about Emerson Lake Palmer.

Abandon All Ships, Here Comes the Kraken and All's Quiet. All three fall under the metal/metalcore category.

Strung Out. No ones heard of them out of people I know and they've been around for awhile and are awesome. One flaw is that they are a bit repetitive, but why fix what's not broken?

Ok kids, time for a fun ride.

The Black Keys
I recognised a few of those bands, but I love the Black Keys! My two favorite albums are Attack and release and Magic Potion. The one with the black cover and their faces (Alive, maybe?) was a more bluesy than I normally like, but Heavy soul is awesome.

Well, atleast everyone in my school and my friends. They don't know about Them Crooked Vultures and they're absolutely brilliant.
I've heard of them, and watched them on (I think) Austin City Limits.

John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl are awesome, love the Zep and the Foo. Less familiar with queens of the stone age, but they're pretty good.

Muse. Oh wait, all these wannabe American fans learned about them, and now they suck.

I swear I was the first Yankee who knew about them.
Muse has always been popular in America. Im a "yankee" and I have always known about them.

The reason Muse sucks is because they are trying too hard to get on the radio...

No one I know has heard of Big Rude Jake. But I hear he's pretty popular in the neo-swing scene.

I completely agree with you. Their songs use to not really cover one topic, but by all the fame they were getting it seemed like, "Oh shit, what do all young people hate? Oh right, the government". Remember Knights of Cydonia? What the hell did that song even mean?
