Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.
Both are awesome sci fi series with great stories and characters and some awesome space battles in a few of the episodes.
Action packed excitement mixed with compelling drama, what more do you want
I should also point out that they restarted Atlantis on Sky one today in the UK. Double episodes monday to friday from 5pm UK time
kudos

Misfits, it's a brilliant deconstruction of the superpowered teens sub-genre, it combines often hilarious well written dialogue with real character development and a twist at the end that actually left me speechless, and surprisingly catches the misfit British Teenage feeling very well.

The IT Crowd is also good, if you're into surreality.

How I met your mother
...and:

NCIS - most watched television show in America: follows the (mis)adventures of a team in the Navy Criminal Investigative Service. Best character development I have ever seen and phenomenal chemistry. also funny

Burn Notice - most watched show on cable: Spy gets kicked out of CIA, dropped in Miami where he, his trigger happy ex, and Bruce Campbell work as vigilantes while he tries to get his job back. some of the cons are ludicrous, its funny as hell, with DYI spy tips in the narration.

Top Gear- Brits with cars being zany and funny. nuff said

"How i Met Your Mother" - the main character (Ted) is telling his kids the story of how he met their mom. Jason Seagull and Neil Patrick Harris are in it.

"Community" - Joel McHale has to go back to college so he attends a community college. Ken Jeong plays a spanish teacher.

"The Big Bang Theory" - four nerdy guys live out the social woes of being geniuses.

"The Office" - Steve Carell and John Krasinski manage the Scranton branch of the Dunder Mifflin paper company.

These shows are 30 min sitcoms and REALLY funny. I love all of them.

BlackAdder- Well the first season is pretty rubbish but seasons 2-4 are some of the funniest and wittiest comedy I have seen.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The episodes that link the primary story are very good and the whole world and the ideas it has are brilliant.

Arrested Development - Very funny series Up there with Blackadder as my favourite comidies.

Garth Merengies Darkplace - Great comedy, shame they only made one season.

Okay, here goes.

Avatar: The Last Airbender (best show ever)
Firefly (best live-action show ever: great sci-fi)
The IT Crowd (absolutely hilarious show for tekkies)
Avatar: The Last Airbender
The Office (hilarious and heartwarming comedy)
How I Met Your Mother (really funny show)
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Clannad (heartwrenching dramatic romantic comedy anime)
Kanon (see Clannad)
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Full Metal Alchemist (great fantasy anime)
Death Note (fantastic psychological thriller anime)
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Orphen (fantasy anime)

Oh, did I mention Avatar: The Last Airbender? Pretty much the greatest show ever. First season's a little kiddy (it is a kids show, after all), but it's an amazingly epic show with a great story and amazing characters. Watch.

Well there is always the first ever Sci-Fi comedy, Red Dwarf, a BBC show.
It may be old, but it is as great as the day it was made. Has a decent amount of episodes. But generally just fantastic, and I can highly recommend it. Especially if you enjoy Sci-Fi and comedy :D
THIS! can't recommend this enough, love the show. Watch series 1-6 beyond that i hear alot that its abit shit (as they totally ruin the whole concept of the show) so just forget that series 7 and 8 and the new red dwarf back to earth never happend its better that way.

Also i like the add the amazing harpers island its like a drama mixed in with a slasher thriller the chracters are very intresting and the plot is very well done and its totally unlike anything else out there GO WATCH IT!

Battlestar: Galactica
-Starts off great with a mini "made for tv movie" premier. It sounds like a silly sci fi show but actually it's very good, the mid seasons have their dry moments with politics but I even found that part interesting. In short it's a show that tackles diverse topics using the setting of a war ship and the remainders of humanity in a small fleet, with robots who are controlled by more advanced robots who the humans created trying to eradicate humanity.

Big Bang Theory
-Pretty funny sitcom about 4 losers. Usually doesn't appeal to people of lesser intellegence, because they have jokes about physics and math priciples among other things. Also, they love Battlestar: Galactica.

Anyway these are the two most recent one's I've watched.
Wait... you are me!
That's word for word what I was going to say (except for the "losers", i prefer "geeks").

qft
BBC Entertainment just relaunched it a week ago or so, have watched nearly every episode until now. Astonishing how british shows manage to be good without millions of special effects per episode. Dr Who (which I too would recommend to watch) is another fine example.
