I thought I was the only one who thought that way about RTS-multiplayer. I posted almost exactly the same thing on another forum and was basically called an idiot because they were huge SC2 fans. Employing one out of 4 or 5 builds you found on forums isn't "strategy" and even the creation of those builds basically boils down to math (build order efficiency, speed and whatnot). I get how it's an entertaining exercise for that type of nerd, but nobody should pretend it's anything more than that.
Speaking of Blizzard, Diablo 2 has a similar problem, but less severe. It is the reason why I rarely ever played on Battle.net: If your character build isn't "right" you're a waste of space. But I *love* odd character builds. So I either play alone, or with the 2 or 3 people I know that either don't mind or aren't very good at D2 either.
Which gets us to FPSs. Yes, there are things that work better than others, but since pointing the right way and shooting is the most important part of a (good, proper) FPS, the impact of the "right" loadout or whatever is lessened.
I still hate TF2 though, because there, now, everything either kills you instantly or randomly, no matter what you do. Well, sort of...
