Thanks to a little review by Yahtzee I took it upon myself to find out how the actual mythology spoke of Baldur. After reading this I came to the conclusion that if they had taken a complete 180 degree turn with the gameplay they could have possibly been staring straight at a beautiful gem. A little summary of how Norse mythology spoke of Baldur: He was the most beautiful of all the creatures with a very gentle and kind heart, but unlike the cliche he was quite fragile. Apparently his mum and him were having nightmares about his death so Odin resurrected a prophet and she told of who was to go to Hel (Underworld/Hell) next. Since Baldur was not a warrior and would not die a warrior's death he could not go to Valhalla and was destined to Hel as soon as he died. Well you can read up on the rest if you'd like, but what came to thought is the possibility for an "arty" game that would be quite unique. As we all know most thought centered around the Norse culture is war and violence, so it would be a fresh turn in this. I just think that instead of searching the possibilities they jumped the gun and went straight for the action rpg element that they were comfortable with.

They didn't really "retell" Norse mythology like they said, did they?

Seriously, think about it. They wanted to make an action game from the start so they took wat they could and changed what they couldn't use to fit their needs. In a sense it's not a retelling of the mythology, it's a creation of a totally new mythology.

Well, the change would have been different. I liked it. My only problem, he was supposed to die when the blind guy shot him?!

Yeah, but immediately afterwards they made Planescape: Torment, arguably the most "arty" and unique game to ever sit on mainstream shelves, so +10 internets to them.

I think they are talking about Too Human, not Baldur's Gate.

Eh, they changed Baldr to something completely different, completely screwing with and rewriting the myths. It's not like they don't do this sort of thing all the time. The only game I've ever seen that even tried to stay true to myth is Age of Mythology, and even then it's rather iffy. Which is to say nothing of the campaign mode.

Yup, she asked every single thing in the world not to harm him. Except I think Mistletoe, for some reason, making it HIS ONE WEAKNESS! -_- Anyway, Loki finds out about this and during a fun game of let's throw stuff and hit Baldr and have him show off his newfound invulnerability, Loki manuipulates blind Hodr into shooting a mistletoe arrow ('missle') at him, of course killing Baldr.

After which Baldr get's sent to Hel. And the only way she'll release him is if every creature in the world will weep for him. And, of course, all but one grumpy frost giant (Loki again in disguise, and as a female frost giant no less, he likes to cross dress a lot *shrug*) weep, and thus Baldr stays with Hel until after Ragnarok wherby he can come out after and rule anew with the sons of Thor.

As for screwing up the mythology, I do agree, but someone could make a freaking awesome game out whats there! That goes for all mythology. Hell, even the bible would make an awesome game, if people would just stick the source material.

He did. Hermod goes to Hel to get him back (in the Edda when he does this they make a deal that if everything in the entire universe has a good cry about it then he'll be allowed out, and everything except one giantess, strongly suspected to be Loki in drag, did, so they didn't let him go), and they shove a lightning bolt through his corpse, rewrite his memories, and set him off again.

The change in personality is probably due to this. We don't know what Baldur was like before he got a bullet through the face.
