I was thinking about playing Baldur's Gate II, but I was wondering if I should play Baldur's Gate first. What do you think? Is there story that carries over or should I just start with BGII?

After you are done with those check out Dragon Age: Origins. Amazing game that follows in the footsteps of BGII.

You didn't just compare Baldur's Gate to Kingdom Hearts.

Baldur's Gate is good, but a little outdated.
Try Neverwinter Nights: it's made by the same company, but lacks some of the bugs Baldur's gate was slightly guilty of.

Get both, download Baldur's Gate Tutu (google it) so you can play BG1 in the updated BG2 engine.

Enjoy.

The way Wikipedia tells it, the protagonist is the same, but that's it.

I would go with Baldur's Gate II, as I've heard a lot of good response for it
Well if you play Baldur's Gate I and the expansion Tales of the Sword Coast, and import your character, then you start the game with a higher level then if you would create a new one.

So my advice and play order: BG1 -> TotSC -> BG2 -> Throne of Bhaal.

They're both good, but the first one is a lot harder at the beginning. Level 1 D&D characters with 1dSomething hit points die really easily. Still, I think you oughta play the first one first. It's not impossibly hard, and the story/characters is/are decent, so it's nice to get the whole thing.

Uhhh.... I liked BG2 a bit more, because the questlog was better AND you start with a level 9 Char or so,which is good, because Lvl1 characters are just meh and die when the enemy coughs at them.

When i went back to them i found that baldurs gate 1 was extremely dated so i'd recommend reading a summery of bg 1 on wiki or some place like that and then playing bg2+expansion(tob)

Well, not really. He's asking if he should play II first, and if he'd understand it. I compared it to my story of playing KH2 first and still understanding the story, I wasn't somparing the games.

Having played and completed both, I can say that you should play both.
The story DOES continue over, as stated, though even if you choose to just play BG2, it tells much of the story as a backlog.

Plus, if you play BG1 first, you can actually export your character and import it as your character into BG2 :)

It follows on.
You're imprisoned in the beggining of BG2.
You wont know why if you dont play BG1
You wont know who your partners are
Or why the f**k Minsc has a hamster. ( Its an allmighty miniature giant space hamster )
Or what happened to the druids wife

Eh? It runs fine on XP. I guess Vista might have trouble(?) but I'm sure there are others out there. Did you look around for a solution? You're really missing out! :(

Yeah, I have Vista. It's a pile of shit, it doesn't play anything.
Didn't look for a solution cos me and computers fail anyway, plus I'm usually to busy to play >_>

I've been told there is a lot of enjoyment to be had in finishing both games and expansions, I've never been able to find a copy of TotSC as I don't use Ebay. But I did have a great feeling from just using my chracter from BG: SoA, so if you can I would give it a go from the start.

The games are a blast, and well worth playing.

My tip is buy the 4 in 1 boxset, its cheap and it comes with both games and both expansions. I have it sitting infront of me. Worth every cent.
