I really like female singers but I hate pop and there don't seem to be a lot of bands with female singers. Any suggestions?

Bands I already know about:
Portishead
The Kills
The Dead Weather
Sarge
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The Decemberists
Paramore
Flyleaf
Massive Attack

Those are all I can think of that have female singers.

Well, if you like Symphonic Metal, then all my favorite bands.

Nightwish.
Epica.
Krypteria.
Within Temptation.

All really great symphonic metal with female lead singers.

I was going to say Nightwish anc Lacuna Coil but someone already beat me to them.

Within Temptation is also excellent. Reminds me of a cross between Nightwish and Evanescence.

I saw at sonisphere the other day a band called Delain.

Like Nightwish but much better.

And how does your list not have Within Temptation and Evanescence...

Eyes Set to Kill are amazing!

The lead singer is female, even though it opens with a male screamer.

I'd say check out the KidneyThieves.

Their female singer is awesome. They did the soundtrack to Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Awesome music.... http://kidneythieves.com/

Garbage has a good album Version 2.0 that's not really pop. They're kinda old I guess

I liked Isobel Campbells collaborations with Mark Lanegan, so you may want to check those out.

Try Elysian Fields, if it´s not too mellow for you.

Unfortunately, I know very few good bands with female singers, but this one I can recommend.

When you say pop, do you mean modern pop or do would you include things like The Shangri-La's, the Supremes or the Ronnettes? Because they are all great classic pop and I would definately suggest getting a Phil Spector (he produced most of them) compilation. Their modern day equivalent would be the Pipettes (youtube "pull shapes").

Punk/alternative:

Patti Smith (the "Poet Lauriet of Punk")
Blondie
X-Ray Spex
Siouxsie and the Banshees
PJ Harvey
Liz Phair (Exile in Guyville only)
the Breeders (Kim Deal's, the Pixies bassist, band)
My Bloody Valentine

Folk:

Joanna Newsom (she plays the harp)
Joni Mitchell
Tracy Chapman
Laura Marling

Indie pop (not shitty, trust me):

Magnetic Fields (they alternate between male and female vocalists)
Tallulah Gosh/Heavenly (basically the same band, Jardin de Heavenly is definately worth checking out)
The Pipettes
Feist
The Vaselines (aka. Kurt Cobain's favourite songwriters)
Dirty Projectors (3 female singers, 1 male singer)
Florence + the Machine
Best Coast
Vivian Girls
Dum Dum Girls

Other:

Aretha Franklin
Bjork
Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of Serge Gainsbourg)

Crystal Castles, lead singer Alice Glass.
Most amazing band ever, saw them at Latitude this year; she arrived on stage drinking neat from a bottle of whisky with the security tag still on it, said that any rapists should be castrated and don't deserve to live, they shouldn't be here. Then went on to perform an amazingly energertic set. And at one point while crowd surfing someone grabbed her tit, so she repeatedly punched them in the head, she got up on stage and said "Touch my tits, I'll kick you the fucking head *****!" and spat at the crowd. It was frickin awesome!

Plus look at outspoken artists the Knife who have recived numerous Grammy awards but refused to collect them because of the male dominated music industry.

And of there's always Robyn, swedish electopop godess if you're into that sort of thing ;)
