Skillet have a female back-up singer in some of their songs. She features prominently in Awake & Alive, The Last Night, Hero, & Rebirthing for starters.

Crystal Castles, lead singer Alice Glass.
Most amazing band ever, saw them at Latitude this year; she arrived on stage drinking neat from a bottle of whisky with the security tag still on it, said that any rapists should be castrated and don't deserve to live, they shouldn't be here. Then went on to perform an amazingly energertic set. And at one point while crowd surfing someone grabbed her tit, so she repeatedly punched them in the head, she got up on stage and said "Touch my tits, I'll kick you the fucking head *****!" and spat at the crowd. It was frickin awesome!
Why the hell were they on before Belle and Sebastian? I've seen them twice, but both times just incidentally (Latitude and supporting Blur).
I've not really listened to their album yet, and I've heard its got good reviews, so I'm not going to comment on that, but I must say seeing them at Latitude was not a fun experience. I was on the front barrier, and this guy next to me said he had seen them 12 times, wierd guy, had lots of suspicious scars on his wrist. He went mental, just starting elbowing me. There were times when I had his arm in my neck, a security guard in front of me, the crush behind me and a crowd surfer on top. And I needed a wee. Was not pleasant.
Macabees were pretty dross as well.
B&S were worth it though.

Metric has Emily Haines as a lead singer. Plus they are Canadian :D Her solo stuff (Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton) is pretty good but very vocal and piano based.

When you say pop, do you mean modern pop or do would you include things like The Shangri-La's, the Supremes or the Ronnettes? Because they are all great classic pop and I would definately suggest getting a Phil Spector (he produced most of them) compilation. Their modern day equivalent would be the Pipettes (youtube "pull shapes").

Punk/alternative:

Patti Smith (the "Poet Lauriet of Punk")
PJ Harvey
Liz Phair
the Breeders (Kim Deal's, the Pixies bassist, band)
My Bloody Valentine

Folk:

Joanna Newsom (she plays the harp)
Joni Mitchell
Tracy Chapman
Laura Marling

Indie pop (not shitty, trust me):

Magnetic Fields (they alternate between male and female vocalists)
Tallulah Gosh/Heavenly (basically the same band, Jardin de Heavenly is definately worth checking out)
The Pipettes
Feist
Dirty Projectors (3 female singers, 1 male singer)
Florence + the Machine
Best Coast
Vivian Girls
Dum Dum Girls

Other:

Aretha Franklin
Bjork
Charlotte Gainsbourg (daughter of Serge Gainsbourg)
You... did... NOT... just post the poster child for crappy pop songs about being a whore as being PUNK did you? Really, Liz FUCKING Phair as punk.

Submitted for the approval of the punk community...

versus

BIG DIFFERENCE
Ok, firstly I said "punk/alternative" (Patti Smith is the only one I said that could really be called "punk") and secondly, yea, her new stuff is unapologetic shittyness (the album thd song you gave is off is the 17th worst album on Metacritic and got a 0.0 from Pitchfork). However, her first album, Exile in Guyville, is a very acclaimed indie rock record. In all fairness, perhaps "punk/alternative" wasn't the best categorisation, but whatever.

I will however, edit my list. I've added Blondie, X Ray Spex and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

I really like female singers but I hate pop and there don't seem to be a lot of bands with female singers. Any suggestions?

Bands I already know about:
Portishead
The Kills
The Dead Weather
Sarge
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
The Decemberists
Paramore
Flyleaf
Massive Attack

Those are all I can think of that have female singers.
If you like metal, look up Deadlock. The have two vocalists and one is female, plus her voice is amazing...

well, most of my favorites have been recommended to death, but there's still Cadaveria. It's really great, but not for everyone:

Same thing applies to Light This City, it's really great but not for everyone:

Also Kittie, but the vocals usually range from great to shit from song to song.

Justin Beiber.

Nah, just kidding. I do normally do not listen many female singers, but I think Firelake is an option. They sang on STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl, just where you start the game as it's listened in a radio.

Other than that, I have no other recommendations, unless you want Japanese singers, but I doubt that is what you are asking...

Yeah it was an odd line up. :p

Macabees were crap, I didn't get to see Belle and Sebastian but I heard they were good. I left to see the XX, they were good but a bit boring not the kind of band you'd want to see live. Also it was in the Word tent which is a crap place to see any band as it's under a massive poorly lit tent on the side of a hill. Also someone nicked my hat in there, spent the rest of the festival interogatting any one who had a hat that looked like mine :(

Also as a final odd note, at one point I had to bend down to tie up my shoe laces and the woman behind me said "Are you doing a shit?" :|

Nice to see so many people into great female-fronted metal bands.

Some of my faves:

After Forever (sadly disbanded)
Arch Enemy (from Wages of Sin onwards, prior to that the singer was male)
Autumn (the Dutch one)
Chalice
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Draconian
Edenbridge
Elis
Epica
The Gathering (with Anneke, not the new one)
Holy Moses
Krypteria
Lacuna Coil
Madder Mortem
Nightwish
ReVamp (Floor Jansen's new band)
Stream of Passion
Tristania
Xandria

Ayreon also uses some awesome female singers, a number of which sing for the bands I've listed above.

The xx are 2 kinds of music: Late night driving music or sex music (or both if you want to have a horrible but awesome accident). Because I wasn't in a car and because I would probably have gone and seen them with a male friend, it just didn't seem appropriate. Also, I get the impression that Im going to have a lot more chances to see the xx

Did you see James before the Macabees? They were awesome.

In all fairness with the taking a poo comment, I remember at the Macabees, there was a big kerfuffle that someone actually had done a shit in the middle of the crowd. I never verified the fact but still...

Best bands I saw that weekend were Jonsi (lead singer from Sigur Ros), Belle and Sebastian, the National, Dirty Projectors and Yeasayer. Jonsi was probably the best.
