Every band I like, because I feel that they're usually underrated, at least by the mainstream audience. Holyhell though, certainly, are not so much underrated as unknown: they have less than 10,000 fans on Facebook.

Go listen to Last Vision now!

They also don't have many great reviews, which is odd. I was blown away by their first (and only) album.

Sleep gets no respect from anyone besides other musicians. Relatedly, High on Fire don't get enough love from people.

They're almost unknown where I live. Almost nobody listens to them.
Ah, fair enough. It's interesting how a band can be so big in so many places all over the world but not in others.

Yeah I can see where your coming from, but I remember 16Volt from the Primal videogame years ago and I thought they were fan-fucking-tastic, the sounds seemed so alien to me and the song At The End was so haunting when I first heard it. Same with Adema heard in a game liked the songs, bought their first albumn which was a good piece of metalwork, then over the years they did seem to become more generic. But hopefully with the origional lineup back together that will end.
I get what you mean about that alien sound now, that's interesting. It's easy to get into something when there's a connection with something else you like, like a game.

I agree that Ensiferum is underrated, but someone covered them at battle of the bands at school and I know of a few fans so they never came across as borderline obscure to me. I think they're kind of in between, not popular and relatable enough for the average person, too popular and jovial sounding for the kvtist snob.

A few other underrated folk metal bands:

- Melechesh

Middle Eastern metal riffs!
Just ignore the cheesy taxonomy if you want :p
almost 100k views, I guess that's not bad

- Hromovlad

They sound so alive.
The start sounds familiar, I don't know why.

That Handsome Devil. They were the guys who did "Elephant Bones" for Guitar Hero 2, but their Debut EP and their album A City Dressed In Dynamite are freaking awesome punk/jazz hybrids.

Other than that, I'd say Neutral Milk Hotel. I know they're loved by hipsters and music critics, but every time I bring them up with my buddies they say "Oh, that band with the Jesus Christ song? Man, those dudes suck." They then proceed to ironically shout "I LOOOOVVVVEEEEEE YOOOOOOOUUUUU JEESSSSSSUUUUSSSSS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSTTTT". My friends are odd.

Thread deserves to be bumped.

- The Horrors

This psychobilly/garage rock band has been overshadowed by a later-emerging scene kid wet dream UK band of the same name. Barely any views at all. I used to think this band and The Horrors from the UK were the same band when I was younger, strange, I vaguely assumed they must have changed their sound and stopped singing with a fake American accent <_< Yeah, I was kind of dumb.

- Teenage Fanclub

Their name is clever, along with the title and cover art of their most successful album bandwagonesque (1991). I think I recall seeing them in one of those "albums you must listen to before you die" books, but they still don't seem to have much recognition among my generation.

Well I used to think Arcade Fire would never get the praise it deserves bu then they go nominated for a grammy for album of the year.

A pretty funky band called Anamanaguchi, and Rebecca Mayes.
