Music doesn't last very long really.
I just want to call bullshit on this, because I listen to music that is 200 years old. The real classics can be remembered forever, but only the truly special music, like Mozart and Beethoven, can stand the test of time. Music can last as much time as people are willing to give it.
Mozart wrote hundreds of compositions, dozens of operas. Lots and lots and lots of music. As did every omposer of his time. The number of people who can name Mozart's works (beyond possibly something like the dies irae) are few and far between, musical scholars and fans of classical.

The same will happen to bands. The music might remain, but the band will be largely forgotten, as will the vast majority of their music. The Beatles released some 200 songs, and already, less than 40 years on, people remember only the big numbers, maybe 10 at most. The Bands are fading, which was the point of the thread.

The Clash?
Well they certainly can't make new music considering Joe Strummer went the way of Kieth Moon, and John Entwistle. :< But oh well I'm certainly still listening to their music.

Wintersun. Last album in 2004, been delaying their second one ever since.
Hmm I've been Ninja'd. This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title, I have a feeling Time will come out this year though.
Also ninja'd. I liked that album (I heard of them though you, so thanks thunderhorse).

OT - Necrophagist - When the hell are they going to make thier third album we've been waiting too long.
Solstafir - Icelandic post-black metal band. Awesome songs (She Destroys Again, Necrologue rule) but they don't have much publicity (Though being black metal they may despise that, damn you music scene rules)

Well, one of my personal favourites are already sort of faded away, and unfortunately forgotten by most - Refused. Damn shame, because even though they split up ages ago, they've still got one of the best albums of all time under their belt The Shape of Punk to Come [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shape_of_Punk_to_Come]. Seriously, if you call yourself a fan of the genre and haven't listened to this band, do yourself a favour and look into it.

I'm also starting to see a decearse in Iron Maiden fans...which shouldn't happen!
Don't worry, Maiden has another studio album in the works.

OT: Eluvietie isn't too popular on this side of the pond, I've had a hard time tracking down their work. Also, Manowar.

system of a down im scared if they fade away
You know that System split a while ago right?
They din´t split.They're on hiatus.
And they're coming back this year I think.Seeing as how they're going to be on Download 2010.
At the risk of bursting your bubble, Serj has a new solo album out later this year and recently told the media this:
http://www.nme.com/news/system-of-a-down/49424

They won't fade away, but I hope when they return they are still good.

OT: The Offspring are in danger of doing this I suppose, but they are, to be blunt, getting on a bit now, maybe their time is up.

Tool... What can I say? Tool will be remembered. They'll probably make at least 1 more album, but whether it's good or not, Tool will be remembered.
I certainly hope so. Their songs aren't always good, but when they are good, they're fucking great.

This reminds me. Maynard owns a winery, if I recall correctly. I wonder if the wine's any good.

There's actually a documentary [http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/bloodintowine/] coming out about Maynard's struggle to make that dream come true. Seems pretty damn entertaining too.

That does look interesting. I'll have to rent it when it comes out.
