Unflattering but true. I don't get why people are so ticked off by Obama just promoting education and saying how iPods and Xboxes provide distractions (Sheesh, they always want to find something to say against him).

and fuck you to obama but seriously man its self control not the devices. I mean I have fucking ADHD and at one point was considered borderline retarded by the educational system. Now I am going to a good collage with a 40% scholarship, I scored a 1900 on my SATs and am taking 3 AP classes and about to graduate High school. I am an avid video gamer and an avid user of tech and its not hurting me.

He also said, in another article covering the same topic:

Obama argued that from the days of the pioneer politicians who founded the United States, until the modern day, education and knowledge had been the key to progress and US democracy.

He drew a line between Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, and today's challenges.

"What Jefferson recognized... that in the long run, their improbable experiment -- called America -- wouldn't work if its citizens were uninformed, if its citizens were apathetic, if its citizens checked out, and left democracy to those who didn't have the best interests of all the people at heart.

"It could only work if each of us stayed informed and engaged, if we held our government accountable, if we fulfilled the obligations of citizenship."
So far, its the only thing President Obama has said or done that I am in complete agreement. I am in a constant state of loathing with the modern world and all her obsessed little subjects, but just another chapter in the tragedy of my life.

All dramatic prose aside, as soon as I can afford it, I will be living on a beach in Tahiti or Costa Rica, with no electricity, as many books as I can find, and a nice, smooth surfboard for company. And maybe a dog.

And the occasional hooker.

What exactly did he say thats so bad? He is essentially saying that videogames can distract kids from more important things like education and he is absolutely right in that aspect. So what exactly is the big deal here?

Edit: Wow I can see the majority of people commenting on this thread didn't even bother to read the article.../sigh this site has slowly started becoming more and more like every other gaming forum and less intelligent every day...

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion no matter how WRONG they are. I don't really have to worry about Obama passing anti-game bills here up North =)

Distractions, yes, (and so is almost every form of entertainment. Is this bad) but "new pressures on our democracy"? What an ass.

Hey, you know what else is a distraction? Playing golf, and Obama does plenty of that.

I call for impeachment!

I was fine with the healthcare reform, I was okay with greater government involvement! But THIS!? Videogames, and Ipods, and Iphones are some of the most American things on the planet (although they're all made in China)!

This... He, has gone TOO FAR!

OT: Meh, he has his own opinions and it wasn't a call to ban all Ipods.

Kill him, put his head on a stick as a warning to all other politicians, its the only way for them to understand that gaming doesn't make us violent.
I see what you did there....

OT: I don't know much about Obama, being in Canada I can't say I followed the election. But I must say I think you took what he said the wrong way. He was stressing education over the media distractions kids face today. I think all he meant was that kids need to focus on getting an education and being a contributing member of society, instead of worrying about their next tweet. Seems to make sense to me.

Quote - "the iPod and the Xbox has not always been good for the cause of a strong education"

So, to the topic starter - you can tell me titles that you play that are helpful to your education?
If people spent as much time studying and learning the ins and outs of a game (like some people learn Eve or WOW) imagine how good they would be at say, business or art?

"With iPods and iPads; Xboxes and PlayStations -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said.

Put simply, it's a fun time waster - and he's right. There is little value (in terms of real personal gain in skills), you have a fun time but you learn nothing from the experience.

That's why there should be some self-control when playing games, not like the 14 year old that plays WOW until her eyes fall out.

Hey! Obama's been talking crap about vidja games! Let's get that muther fucker!

Seriously, why are gamers so defensive? He was talking more about electronics in general, anyway. Frankly, even he had only implicated videogames, why the fuck should we care?

Oh well, he doesn't like video games, what person over 35 with a stressful job plays video games. I still like him, but know one likes the same exact things as someone else. I don't care. He didn't make a law against it.

I think its because of inside stuff going on. The people want to hear video games get dissed, and their president is going to do exactly that to keep the people happy for the next tax release or something like that. It is also because of peer pressure, in my opinion. Because no other politicians ever complimented video games, so what the hell.
