Does The Last Remnant end up being any good by the way? I've gone through the first few hours and i'm unsure how the story is gonna go, it could go the boring, generic route with random anime/JRPG tropes just randomised and thrown at you or it could go somewhere interesting.

The combat system did look interesting so I would like to know if it's worth going back into.
The Battle Ranking system in TLR is incredibly confusing at times.
Grinding isn't actually recommended until you can finally field a total of 18 units, but you need to pick and choose which battles you go through until then. Killing everything that stands in front of you is not advised.
Try to fight monsters that are "slightly stronger" or "strong" by the time you are up to the Nest of Eagles. You can check this by looking at the help text on the first command in battle. Or you can get a general idea of how strong the enemies are by looking at the starting morale. You want the fights to be drawn out but beatable so that your units get the chance to choose commands and get damaged for stat gains. Beating up weaklings over and over again throughout the entire game will inflate your BR but leave you weaker overall.

Dragon's Dogma

I don't think I've ever played a fantasy RPG (ish) where the combat felt so wonderful. It has just the slightest dash of Devil May Cry to give the generally grounded combat a very satisfying flourish. Many fantasy RPGs have tried to copy the Lord of the Rings films, but this was the first one that succeeded in truly giving me that feeling.

If we could get a Dragon Age game with this exact combat, I'd be in heaven.
This one, DD had just too few big monsters for my liking (huge Monster Hunter fan) but the way you could fight them was absolutely fantastic! An airborne enemy giving you trouble? Set fire to it's wings, if it lands destroy it's wing, ask one of your followers to give you a jump boost, grab hold on the enemy and you can climb on it and stab it in a weak spot.
If there was a game that was a mixture between Dragons Dogma and Monster Hunter I'd pre-order that shit in a heartbeat.

My combat systen of a choice would be from the Monster Hunter series. Keep getting slapped by a monsters tail? Cut it off. Keep getting stunned by a monster? Cut off the stun appendix/gem. It has a very reactionary gameplay which I like a lot.

I liked the Megaman Battle Network/Starforce system, the use of proper positioning and timing made it very cool to play and combo attacks (stun with a shock attack then lob a grenade, steal a tile of the opponent's area so you can get in range for your wide sword etc.)
Whoa, I completely forgot about those games! Damn right Battle Network was cool! My first and only entry to the series was Battle Network 5, though, and even then I don't think I finished it all the way for whatever reason. Are there any standouts in the series that you'd suggest?
Been a while since I've played the original Battle Networks, but Starforce is the newer continuance of the series and I quite enjoyed them (I've played the 1st 2). As I understand it, its either in the future or an alternate timeline where instead of all the online connectivity stuff from Battle Network, the tech is based on wireless EM waves. Instead of having a Net Navi program to battle for you, the major characters bond with aliens and can travel around the wireless world.
The battle system is similar but in 3D. The biggest change is that the camera is behind megaman, and he can only move left and right. It was a bit of a shame since it made it seem like there was less options in combat, but they instead gave a lock on ability which when timed right let you do counters and stun enemies. Each game added more and more forms you could turn into as well (the eponymous Ninja from Starforce 2 was really cool).

Probably the best thing about it all is you could probably get the Starforce games dirt cheap, I know here in Aus, the first 2 instalments (all variations of) were selling for $10 at one point.
The Battle Network ones are a bit trickier, I'm trying to get a full collection which is hard to do with out of print GBA games, especially when I aim to get them with original box (cardboard) and manuals.

Hybrid Heaven. It was a little wonky, but I enjoyed the way you could diversify yourself with punches, kicks, grapples, dodges, blocks, counters, etc... or, if bored, try to develop a character with the most powerful left hook in existence.

Valkyria Chronicles - I wish they would make a small change though... Pause the action while you are aiming and before you start moving. It gave the computer an extremely one-sided advantage, because it was not something that affected its faction.

Bastion anyone?. I loved its isometric side scrolling combat, the huge variety of options it gave you to fight and how its satisfying to pull off the perfect shot or block.

+1

I loved the combat in this game, it was fast, fluid and had a lot of impact. Dark Souls was also good but the combat was very slow and plodding, the one in this game was a lot faster. I think a hybrid with the zoomed up camera angle of Dark Souls and slow tactics combined with the devastating abilites of Dragons Dogma would make something really fun to play.

Resonance of Fate. Damn, story was bonkers and shit but that battle system and those ridiculous guns with 10 clips and 5 sights were so bloody awesome us play with. When you get in the groove with bosses and don't miss crosses it becomes anime poetry in motion.

I'm gonna somewhat cheat here

Last Blade 2 (yes it's 1on1 fighing game). Pure fun. And so varied. Just... ahhhhhhhh
