Perhaps, but they were really well done in Battlefield 2142. Its basically the one feature that'll make/break my purchase of this game. Its that big of a deal to me.
Well.

Yeah, I could see why. However, I think you underestimate the ability of random people online to follow orders... or maybe there are plans to set up an Escapist BF server?
You'd be surprised at how well it works. Commanders order squads. If people are in squads, that means they're at least willing to use some form of teamwork. Those who don't want to do it just don't join squads.

I really doubt the game will get anything like the commander mode from BF 2 and BF 2142. The commander mode really doesn't look like something that could work well with a console control scheme, and since this is the first Battlefield game outside of the Bad Company franchise that is multiplatform odds are that they will axe the commander mode for the sake of keeping the game playable on a console.

I would also not expect the maps on the PC version to be any different from the console version in spite of the higher player count. Odds are that the maps are exactly the same but with more players on the PC, which I assume will means that playing the game on the PC might actually make for a less enjoyable experience since each map would be too cramped to make any real room for squad tactics, everybody would just rely on Zerg rushes.
I think it could work, with a little ironing out of course. Here's how I'd do it(When I talk about the face buttons, it'll be 360/PS3. So A/X, Y/Triangle, B/Circle, X/Square):

Normally to bring up the map you hit "select". For the commander, instead of the map, it brings up the command interface. This has the map, squad list, and his ability list(airstrike/UAV/ect.).

He navigates the list using the left/right bumper. On the squad list(left bumper), he can select a squad, or press "Y/Triangle" to select all squads, then it automatically switches to the map where he can choose where to send them, using the face buttons for the orders(A/X = "move to", B/Circle = "Defend Position", X/Square = "Attack Position", Y/Triangle = "Cancel").

The scheme is more or less the same with the Commander Abilities(air strike/UAV/ect.). He uses the right bumper to switch to the list, selects an ability, it switches to the map, and he chooses where to use it.

For the map, there's a pointer that can be moved with the right analog stick, and you can move the map with the left. You can zoom in/out using the triggers. Here he can see where people are(perhaps use the D-Pad to filter squads/points/vehicles/ect) and call out enemies with the Y/Triangle buttons. He can also hit A/X to set a "point of interest" or something.

But yeah, thats how I'd do it. It would probably need some work, but its not impossible.

Well, I don't remember whether you could actually respawn near your squadmates in BF2, but you definitely could in BC2 and that was probably the main reason people ever joined squads.

You could only respawn on the squad leader in BF2 and 2142. Which sucked ass to be honest. I'd love if they kept that for Battlefield 3.

Kept what? The BC2 system?

I mean, I have no problems with it as well, but it really does go against the assumption that the people who join squads are ready to play along.

Yeah the BC2 system. And how does it go against the assumption that people who join squads are ready to play along?

Well, most people join them just to get a closer respawn.

Maybe not most, but a lot of them.

Maybe that does encourage team work, but I haven't spoken to anyone while playing that game once.

Will it still take all my ammo, shot into their head, to drop 1 guy?

Bullets have always been too weak in the BF series.
Ill bet money it will have a hardcore mode like badcompany 2 did, where it only takes a couple rounds to drop someone with almost any gun
God, not this not this! I hate when games don't let me retaliate, it shouldn't always be who shoots first.

Of course there is no complaints from console about 64 player games.

It is such a mind boggling stupid mechanic that basically breaks the game.
Vehicle combat and large team sizes broken up into smaller squads have basically been what I associate with the Battlefield franchise. With Bad Company comes the destruction mechanic. Those three things make the game, so 64 player maps are hardly a stupid game breaking mechanic. It prevents one player from carrying a team and actually provides a potent reason to work in a squad. In my opinion the stupidest thing DICE did was botch voice communication. For a game emphasising squad based gameplay the fact you can't be sure whether the guy in your squad can hear you or not is just stupid.

Bad Company's low player count squad death match and squad rush modes are the bastard offspring of CoD Battlefield and while they're fun they aren't exactly typical for the franchise.
Thats why Rush and Conquest are still the most popular modes, and you still can talk to people in your squad.

And the 64-player maps really have no purpose; on all of them,at least 40% to even 60% of the map is wasted, because there is absolutely no reason or benefit to going out there.

I liked BF2 and the downloadable 1942 for XboxLive was well worth 15 dollars.

BFBC1 and 2 were both letdowns though, and I sense this one following that path.

If they made people have less health, and got rid of classes i'd like the game more. I should be able to take the guns I want and the powers I want.

In battlefield you always have 1 giant flaw to your class and it sucks.
