I have no idea what the apparently problem is. I've been playing it since the release and bar an instance or two of unresponsive EA servers for log-in it has been smooth sailing.

I do not care about Battlefield. Not my cup of tea, but I had no idea things were this bad. Is the game just super buggy or something? The reviews I saw gave it pretty solid marks and didn't mention bugs. So what happened?
You know you can't really give an AAA title a score of less than 80% because:
-fanboys will cry
-publishers will cry
-developers will cry
-game magazines/sites won't receive review codes for any new games from said publishers
-little kittens will die
-everyone will cry

also review copies of the game might have not been the same version we got in retail/digital distribution.
This is most likely the case. AAA games get 7/10 and lower fairly often. One example of that was with Lost Odyssey. It was revealed that the retail version had greatly improved loading times compared to the Western review copies, but reviewers refused to change the score, even though their main issue was the loading times.

Also, keep in mind that online infrastructure issues are less likely to come up when reviewers are playing the game amongst themselves, and that it is harder to find bugs when reviewers are trying to bust through a game fast to get multiple reviews done a month, as opposed to the general public taking their time through a game.

In short, reviews are not always accurate as to how "solid" a game is, but I don't think it is anything malicious or self-serving on the part of reviewers, but an issue with the workstyle necessary to review.

So, what's your preference?

A)Delayed but functional on release.

B)Released on time but broken.

Personally, I prefer category A.

EDIT:

Oh, and option C)Released functional on time - was never EA's strong suit. Not really much hope for that.

good. its hits them where it hurts them. their wallets.
even when they try now to make things better, they still seem to fail how to do it. maybe this time they have learned to take their time to finish the game properly instead rushing it out through the door before it can finish brushing its teeth.

But it's a bit unfair to slam other people for not agreeing with you, especially when a significant portion of people do.
I didn´t mention anything like that in my post at all.
By the way 4 MILLION copies is still a lot for a broken game isn´t it?
EA is using the same practice for releasing games for already 20 years now (ever heard of Ultima 8 for example), to say the next game will be broken is hardly pre-judgeing, because they will push it out for the next movie.
The only thing they would care about is if people would stop buying they games. not just one in particular but all of them.

Oh no, my friend. Not someone. Someone will not die.

EVERYONE will die.

OT, a fuck-up in a single game drives shares down that much? That's actually kind of weird, honestly. I've got no particular investment in the Battlefield series, or really any series EA is putting out (or any series at all, but that's another story), so I might not understand, but you'd think that even if someone did see that BF4 was not having the greatest start, they wouldn't go into a blind panic and dump all their stock.

Good!

Hopefully this means we are that much closer to crashing the industry so we can be rid of the decadence.

Obviously this means that they're not releasing enough DLC's to keep us interested in their product. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130255-EA-CEO-People-Need-DLC-To-Tide-Them-Over-Between-Releases]

It's not just any game. This is EA's moneymaker of the quarter. When profit forecasts are short, stock prices drop like a rock. 50% is a bit much for a company that doesn't record as much profit as it projected it would, but I think that a lot of investors are dumb.

When people panic, be greedy. When people are greedy, panic.
