Be Honest, what did you think of QTE's when you first encountered it?

As of this writing, QTE is reviled by many a gamer (especially here on The Escapist, with Yahtzee's influence and all). This is not the point of the thread. Discard your pre-conceived notions about QTE's and discuss what you thought of it, when you first saw it implemented in a game you're playing.

For me, my first encounter (that I could recall off the top of my head, anyway) with QTE's was with Resident Evil 4. Now, being a moderate fan of the numbered RE's I thought the QTE's in that game was a good way of increasing the tension, that sense of dread while playing (it is an RE game, after all). I'll admit, dying mid-cutscene was pretty embarrassing, but for that game it worked perfectly. Nowhere will you feel truly safe in the game, unless you see the coolest arms merchant in recent years or an unassuming typewriter in a room.

As I recall, my first experience with QTE's (in their modern incarnation) was with Spider-man 3. I remember thinking: "That was pretty--OH SHIT THAT WAS COOL!". They left a good impression; while the game at large was unapologetically bad, the QTE's were certainly nice.

I believe I was saying "Holy Crap!" followed by open jaw as I died when I first came across the QTE.
They were decent enough, and I still find them decent.

I was actually reminded of RE4 when I read Shamus' latest Experienced Points, which then prompted me to make this thread.

I think my first encounter was in God of War. Then they were awesome.

Nowadays, everyone does them wrong. Even the God of War 3 demo did it wrong!

Although Heavy Rain has done it completely right.

I can't remember my first Quick Time Event ... It was very likely in a stylized action game and I'm sure I thought to myself 'Wow! That was pretty cool!!' The novelty wore away though as it always does e.e

Dragon's Lair. The home version, not the arcade. I really sucked those ones up bad.

I hope somebody remembers this game. I'm getting tired of explaining it...

I remember in Shennmue thinking it was a cool idea, but then it just kept going on and on and I found myself getting bored with the gameplay and just playing for the story.

My enjoyment of QTE didn't last long.

I can't remember the first game in which i encountered a QTE...but i've come to live with and can enjoy them when done correctly. Otherwise they just become a bigger nuisance

the first one i remember was in shenmue 2. i am sure there were more before, but none stuck out. i remember thinking jesus i hope these don't get unforgivably hard or make me re-do long stretches of because i missed x by .003 seconds. my assumption was correct, but surprisingly i didn't mind at all.

I think it was in Soul Calibur 3, in the "story" mode.
Didn't enjoy it in that game, or many others, but I can admit that Resident Evil 4, and God of War did them very well.

Can't remember the game. But I've never disliked them.
Indigo Prophecy's QTE hurt. Badly.
The ones that had the character running were horrid.

I honestly can't remeber when I was first introduced to QTEs. Although the earliest one I can remeber was in Call of Duty 3. At first I thought of them as cool and felt like they were a good addition, but after the 5th one I felt like they were getting tedious. It didn't help that you needed quick fingers to beat them on Veteran.

First experience with QTEs was Shenmue on the Dreamcast for me. I enjoyed the idea at first as it seemed like a new way of getting you involved in a cutscene. After a bit it became an annoying way to make you rewatch poor acting and silly dialogue over and over for hitting the wrong button. I can't stand them most of the time now because a full decade later, games are making the same bloody mistake (a la Resident Evil 5).
That being said, I don't mind the God of War 3 style where your punishment for failing one is usually just a bit of health loss.

I don't remember what game it was, but I thought, "huh, that was easy." I don't mind them as long as they are not over done.
