Be Honest, what did you think of QTE's when you first encountered it?

They can be swell or they can be poop.

I don't remember my first swell one, but my first poop one was the rolling boulder in RE4.
Also, Fahrenheit. One giant chain of stupid poopy QTE's and that's all the gameplay constisted of. One of the most overrated games in the history of poop.

QTE's can add to the gameplay, if they're done well, and are not too punishing. They shouldn't be the gameplay itself. Like for example in Force Unleashed, where boss fights pretty much consisted of QTE's to make the game spoonfeed moves to you that look nice, but you derive no satisfaction from. Force Unleashed was poop.

Performing well in games releases dopamine in your brain. That's why they're so addictive. QTE's are not part of this process. You press a button in time and your character drops the moon on some giant spider or something and it just doesn't connect. You're not the one who did that. Your skills aren't being fully tested.

More often than not, QTE's are a cop-out. And the first one I remember, the RE4 one, was a poopy cop-out of poop.

The first time I experienced QTEs was in RE4. I really liked they way they were used in that game. It was more like a test that you were paying attention. It would come as a surprise because only a handful of cutscenes actually had QTEs.

I hate QTEs now though. Most games just overuse it; RE5 had a ridiculous amount of QTEs.

I think my first QTE experience was with super mario RPG. It was new and kinda cool. I later saw it in games like Legend of Dragoon and such but it was always well implemented and helped give you more control in areas where you'd usually just watch and say yeah that was neat. Now though I think games take it a little too far although they can still be well implemented. I do dislike when they suddenly spring a QTE on you and you didn't even know the game had those or had any reason to suspect it did.

They're good if implemented well. But I hate them if I'm given only a split second to react or if they're the rapid button pressing type of QTE (It's not too bad unless I have to press faster than my brain can send the appropriate electrical signals to my thumb).

My first encounter with a QTE was probably in RE4.

They get a really bad wrap don't they o_O More bandwagon jumping by the "individuals". To this day I don't mind them one bit. Although I don't luke sudden implimentation of them resulting in immediate death if you don't get it -_- See Bayonetta...

First one i saw was god of war against the Kraken. I damn near shit myself in excitement.

First experience with QTEs was Shenmue on the Dreamcast for me. I enjoyed the idea at first as it seemed like a new way of getting you involved in a cutscene. After a bit it became an annoying way to make you rewatch poor acting and silly dialogue over and over for hitting the wrong button. I can't stand them most of the time now because a full decade later, games are making the same bloody mistake (a la Resident Evil 5).
That being said, I don't mind the God of War 3 style where your punishment for failing one is usually just a bit of health loss.
Wow I remember this. The one at the barber where you ARE NOT supposed to push the button.... Man I must have failed that about 6 times before it clicked.

Really don't recall the first game I played that had QTEs, but I'm pretty sure I thought it was a cool idea at the time. Then as games continued to develop and let the player do things they would have only seen in cinematics before, I started to see QTEs less as something cool and more as a crutch for when a designer has an idea for what they think is a cool scene but can't come up with any way to actually put in in real gameplay.

The first time i played a QTE was in Blinx: The Time Sweeper. Found it okay the first time. After that it became increasingly annoying every time.

Wait, Legend of Dragoon had QTE's?

Also, I remember that Escapist GameX interview with Yahtzee. Just as he was about to divulge his ideas on how to make QTE's Betterrrerrrerrrrerrrrrerrrrerrrerrrr. To this day I am wondering what he said. Too bad I can't read lips.

Yes technically it did. Or did you forget the scenes where the little exclamation mark would popup prompting you to press X or suffer the consequences. It may have been a simpler form of it but those were simpler times. Also the addition system if you want to count that which I do since it's really not that different from some QTEs today.

I forget what game it was. Something for the PS2. I think it was spider man or something. Anyways, a big x button popped up in the middle of the screen and then I died. I was like "WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?" Shortly followed by "I have to watch this shitty cutscene AGAIN?!?!?!" If quicktime events are incorporated into gameplay well like in god of war, they can be fun. If they're thrown at you in cutscenes, that's just plain annoying.

I had only really seen them in the God of War games, and I liked them, because they were an actually part of gameply. Game like Uncharted, however, just throw them in randomly, which is exactly what I don't like about it.

The first time I encountered a QTE during a cutscene I was ill-prepared and my character suffered for it. Naturally my first reaction was a resounding "WTF?!"

But my second reaction was to point at the screen and say "Oh, you're good. I'll get you next time, Gadget."[footnote]Not my actual words[/footnote]

I don't dislike QTEs. In fact, I pay more attention to cut-scenes now thanks to them. I still hate it when I fail and my character goes SPLAT! though.
