I got on the subject of discussing this with friends today. In addition to deciding that beards make you more manly, we got on the subjects of why or why not we don't have facial hair.

My reason for the beard is twofold. For starters, I highly dislike shaving. My least favorite daily ritual. The other reason I have a beard is because I have a rather young looking, round face. Even though I'm 6'8, when clean-shaven, people think I'm at least two to three years younger than I am. The beard makes me look older, plus it's a slightly different color than the rest of my hair, which I rather like.

So, fellow Escapists, What are your thoughts on facial hair in general?

I'll allow the gruff. And I myself work a government job, so they frown on just not shaving. I keep mine neatly trimmed and well maintained, but I like the feel of it. And I will admit that sometimes I do feel a bit like a lumberjack or some other type of rugged "Man's Man." Plus I look more thoughtful when I stroke it pensively.

Do I have a beard? No.

Why not? Because I'm a female.

If I were a male, I'd have stubble.

Beards. I love 'em.
But I don't have one since I'm a girl XD
None the less, I love any and all facial hair.

I heartily concur, my good lady! Though hopefully not the homeless man stubble than covers your entire neck like a scarf. That's just messy.

I have a quasi-beard at the moment. Entirely because, as a fresh college grad, I have no job and nothing to do all day, so I can't be fucked with shaving. Every 2-3 weeks, it starts to annoy me and I shave it off, but until then I'm rocking at the very least a lot of stubble.

I'm only 13, but I've a significant amount of facial hair for my age.
Not a Full Beard yet, but well on my way.

No, I've never grown a beard and I don't really plan on it. I usually have some stubble going on but that's about it. I don't like the way my face looks with a lot of facial hair because it hides my jawline. Plus, all of the girlfriends I've had in the past have preferred me with little to no facial hair for some reason. So I guess I just got used to it...

Yes, I apologize to the females of the forums. They will never know the joys of having a rugged, manly beard. It's one of the many perks of being male. But I agree. Neck stubble or full neck beards are rather frightening things. I had a couple of friends who didn't shave their faces for a good portion of the second semester of senior year. One of them ended up looking like Jesus with black hair, the other had a ferocious neck beard and little else. It saddened me.

Yes, I have a beard. Why? Because it's awesome.

Beards over babies, my friends.

And I honestly like shaving, but I like my beard more. However, I think I will soon return to my favorite compromise: the goatee.

Well, growing the beard part is the part most annoying.
Because every one glares at your hair if it looks like it came from your toe.

But I think it would be pretty awesome to have a goatee now and than evolve to a grouch beard once I get a lot older.

Because I wanted to have a beard ever since I was a wee bastard. And now that I have one I'm never getting rid of it.
Plus, they make you look cool and manly. A manly man with a manly beard and manly man tits.
