Tales of Symphonia: I played this game not long after suddenly realizing over the space of a week that I HATE Squaresoft and EVERYTHING they've EVER had a hand in. So I was really happy to find something a bit more provoking in this, even if it would've been samey if I had've been an old Tales fan. Which leads to...
Tales of the Abyss: After playing some of the older Tales games, and then Tales of Legendia, and seeing that the series was almost as repetetive as Final Fantasy, I wasn't expecting much from Abyss. I played it about 3-4 years after it came out, and son of a damn I wish I had've played it earlier. The plot was a bit bland but the character development was nothing short of jawdropping. One of the best RPG's I've ever played.
Shadow Hearts Covenant: The other one of the best RPG's I've ever played. Barely anything about this game was at all trying to concede to J-RPG norms (unless it was doing so purely out of mockery), and for that I love it. Awesome plot, damn good characters, and an ending that made me cry like a schoolgirl.
Bioshock: Yeah, same sentiment. I expected something really pretty, not the most immersive game and brain-sucking plot I've ever experienced in a game. (Yeah, I know, I didn't have a PC until I was about 15 so never got to experience stuff like Deus Ex and System Shock)
And one more for good luck... Monster Hunter. With a name like Monster Hunter I was expecting a mediocre action RPG to waste time on. Even though a lot of the game was terrible (THE HITBOXING, OH GOOD GOD THE HITBOXING) I can't bring myself to ever hate that series purely because of how much precision, observation and perfection it requires. Or required. Evidently not anymore since the Wii snagged it. Grr.
EDIT: Second the massive letdown that was ET:QW, add in Persona 3 for my own biggest letdown. I'd received so many reccomendations for it, when I saw that the character was beyond emo and spending time in Starbucks was a gameplay mechanic, and oh sweet lord that terrible music, I almost wept for the $8 spent hiring it.
