I recently played pokemon blue, I was surprised that I think its still fun despite my hate for kiddy anime. Another was portal, I new it would be decent, but god damn it was awesome.

A game that absolutely blew me away was a game that I played in my JRPG days.

I've heard a lot of people talk down on Dragon Quest VIII, but that game sucked me in and reminded me what video games were supposed to be, Fun and Dangerously Immersive

Metroid Prime. I expected it to be fun, but I didn't expect it to top my list.
And Megaman X, which I played recently. Amazing games, both of them

I'm not gonna lie; I preordered Crackdown for the Halo 3 public beta. But when the demo was released on the XBLM, I was surprised at how fun it was. I still tend to go back to it every now and then to mess around in Keys to the City mode.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne/Lucifer's Call. I went into the game knowing nothing about the Megami Tensei series or its history, I just heard on a site that it was a post apocolyptic RPG set in the real world. I was blown away after the world ended in the first 10 minutes of gameplay, then it sucked me in for 4 hours straight, I've never played a game for that long in my life. Defiently a noteworthy experiance.

Call of Duty 4.
Especially after that pile of crap named Call of Duty 2 (it's enjoyable at times, and the atmosphere can be awesome at times... but the gameplay was just first-person whack-a-mole, with different spawn locations for those moles whenever you move 2 steps forward), and the fact that CoD3 was consoles-only for no reason at all (I have no consoles, only PC and handhelds)

Grand Theft Auto 3: The Freedom in that game floored me, and the angry venting rampages helped me get past bad times in my life.

Civilization: gave birth to my love of TBS games

Dune: The battle for Arraks: This game just nailed something in my head so deeply it was the only game I ever played for nearly a year, to the anger of my brothers.

I beta tested COD 4 and it was really hard to get people to believe me how actually awesome it was, it blew me out of the water when i first started it and i couldnt tell anyone.

Bioshock too was a good weekend lost at my PC, one of the best games ever IMO, like visiting another world, totally immersive.

It probably is bioshock as it wasnt "expected" it came from knowhere. The Gears of War titles were ecpected to be great, and they were but it wasnt unexpected.

how about biggest failure of expectations ??

UT3 and ET:QW sucked big time IMO

For me it has to be Dead Rising {360}... When I originally played it at a friend's I thought the controls were too difficult and the game as a whole wasn't that good.

After getting it myself though, I am convinced of quite the opposite. It is one of the best free-roam games on the 360 and the possibilities for fun stuff to do are endless. Great story, too.

The Curse of Monkey Island, I got it expecting an average adventure game (being the first one I've played in the Monkey Island series), but I LOVED the graphical style, and the humour, especially the humour.

Tales of Symphonia: I played this game not long after suddenly realizing over the space of a week that I HATE Squaresoft and EVERYTHING they've EVER had a hand in. So I was really happy to find something a bit more provoking in this, even if it would've been samey if I had've been an old Tales fan. Which leads to...

Tales of the Abyss: After playing some of the older Tales games, and then Tales of Legendia, and seeing that the series was almost as repetetive as Final Fantasy, I wasn't expecting much from Abyss. I played it about 3-4 years after it came out, and son of a damn I wish I had've played it earlier. The plot was a bit bland but the character development was nothing short of jawdropping. One of the best RPG's I've ever played.

Shadow Hearts Covenant: The other one of the best RPG's I've ever played. Barely anything about this game was at all trying to concede to J-RPG norms (unless it was doing so purely out of mockery), and for that I love it. Awesome plot, damn good characters, and an ending that made me cry like a schoolgirl.

Bioshock: Yeah, same sentiment. I expected something really pretty, not the most immersive game and brain-sucking plot I've ever experienced in a game. (Yeah, I know, I didn't have a PC until I was about 15 so never got to experience stuff like Deus Ex and System Shock)

And one more for good luck... Monster Hunter. With a name like Monster Hunter I was expecting a mediocre action RPG to waste time on. Even though a lot of the game was terrible (THE HITBOXING, OH GOOD GOD THE HITBOXING) I can't bring myself to ever hate that series purely because of how much precision, observation and perfection it requires. Or required. Evidently not anymore since the Wii snagged it. Grr.

EDIT: Second the massive letdown that was ET:QW, add in Persona 3 for my own biggest letdown. I'd received so many reccomendations for it, when I saw that the character was beyond emo and spending time in Starbucks was a gameplay mechanic, and oh sweet lord that terrible music, I almost wept for the $8 spent hiring it.

I know I may be shot in my sleep for this, but here we go. Metal Gear Solid 4 beat my expectations, usually when there is a lot of hype in a game, I seem to be suspicious about it. I expected MGS4 to be like every other MGS4 game, but with new additions, better graphics, and new characters. Of course I'm not going to spoil anything for anyone, but I was unable to stop playing for any reason other than to go to the ladies room, smoke, or get another frothy Mountain Dew. The story never seemed dry, even though most of it was repeating to catch people up to speed in case they hadn't played the other MGS titles, yet the way they did story telling kept me captivated and ready for whatever it threw at me next. MGO (Metal Gear Online) was also brilliant, but why isn't there any female models to choose from when creating a character? Sad me.

Killer 7. Picked it up in the bargain bin. Heard it was supposed to be extremely complex, artsy, and that I wouldn't understand the plot without playing it through a few times. The box blurb was not inspiring.

Loved every confusing second. Even the gameplay took me a week to fully follow. Still don't fully understand the plot, not sure anyone really does.

Dark Sector, I had been reading bad reviews about the game left and right but when I finally got around to renting it the other day I found it was a very entertaining experience, maybe not the best gaming experience of my entire life, but it was fun enough to keep my attention.

And then there was the Golden Sun series, my cousin introduced me to it a few years back and I've been a fan of the series ever since.

HL2-expecting a dark shooter... I was thrown into one of the best single-player game ever! Halo 3 also met to my expectations, due to the fact that I've never played a halo game before. Also oblivion... first 10 hours were mind blowing!

EDIT: Sorry, forgot portal. :p

Time Splitters 3: I knew it was going to be good but that game was one of the best shooters I have played. Simply wacky, fun and Epic!

Condemned: I decided to give survival horror one final chance(those games don't scare me as much as they do others) so I expected it to be utter shit. It blew me away!
