Having successfully kicked the habit myself, although after several attempts, I think there are a couple tips that can help you achieve your goal. I would still recommend getting professional help though, if you feel that your life suffers 'cause of it.

1) If you have friends in the game, find other channels to communicate with them that doesn't involve you starting up the game. This is the number one reason why I would find myself back in game and hooked again.

2) Go cold turkey on ALL forums, news sites or anything else involved with WoW (Wowhead, the armory, mmo-champion, wow.com, etc. etc...). Seeing patch notes and exciting new events that are planned for the game certainly won't help you.

3) Uninstall WoW from all computers. Add an authenticator to your account and get someone to keep it for you until you can control your playtime.

4) Get a girlfriend/boyfriend. You won't have time to play! :)

5) Focus your energy on other elements of your life. I went back to sports, movies, music and single player games, and it has ultimately been extremely rewarding.

Take these as guidelines, as what worked for me, might not work for you. I would still recommend getting professional help, as it is very available once you've come clean and admitted your problem.

Anyway, good luck! It's not easy, but it can be done. ;)

Well, first step is admitting it.

NEXT STEP IS CANCELLING YOUR MEMBERSHIP.

I'm on a tight budget (one of the reasons why i played WoW) so i need a game that will last for a while and offer me some replayability.
Any suggestions people?

It's free, a lot of fun to play, easy to get to grips with and can be done as much or as little as you like. However you like to play games, you'll probably find something there for you.

You're welcome.

You could try League of Legends (LoL, yeah you though WoW was funny :p), it's free, just download, sign up and play. However I don't think curing an addiction to something with something else to get addicted to is the way to go. It's not WoW it's you. You just have to stop.

You don't need a massive amount of book knowledge to play, though it does mean you'll get a lot more of the references and jokes. All you really need is the ability to read :p

I needed to quit WoW to concentrate on uni, I uninstalled and threw away the CDs and just did things whenever I felt like downloading and playing it again. Read a book, go out for a run, play some zelda or whatever, just got off my computer where the urge was and did something else. The urges passed after 2 weeks (surprising seeing as I was raiding 4 nights a week), and the account is still linked to my battle.net that I use for Starcraft 2, but its been almost a year now and I just don't want to play anymore...despite having friends who beg me to come back.

If that doesn't work you can give your account details to a friend and have them change the email/password, there problem solved.

As for a game, depends what you're into. Try not to get anything too time intense, but still something really fun and relaxing. Ever played Plants vs Zombies? Great game, you can play a few rounds then go and do something else. Team Fortress 2 is a barrel of fun once you work out its TEAM BASED and find a class you like, and usually pretty damn cheap on steam.

I'm hesitant to suggest it but I think Minecraft is a good option. 10 euros for your own blocky world where you can create and do just about anything you feel like...I spent the last hour making a pig trap. Unlimited bacon, yay! (the chance of spending all your time building random stuff is pretty high though, hence my hesitance)

Right so im trying to beat my WoW addiction (world of warcraft) and i need a game of somekind to keep me interested enough to stop me from crawling back to that attention whore that is WoW.
The problem with this though is that in order not to lose total control of my life i need a game that offers something but that wont totally consume my mind.

Log into your battle.net account. Cancel the WoW subscription.

Tada, you're not playing WoW anymore! It was really simple, wasn't it? Surely you didn't believe it to be an actual addiction?
People like you are an insult to those with real addictions.

Perhaps another game isn't the way to go? Finger painting, gym membership, black tar heroin, Warhammer, waving your penis at small children, learning a new language. Just some examples.
Yes we all wave our penis' at small children.

seriously though, its not as much as an addiction as a "i got notthing to do guess i'll go play WoW" and be bored to death on that.
My subscription to it runs out soon i just need something to keep me entertained enough till holidays are over and i can pick my life up again.
Try, I got nothing to do, guess I'll go on a run. You will seriously feel better once you start to get past that 1 mile mark and not die from exhaustion and who knows, you might be a junkie for it and not know it yet. Seriously though, physical exercise helps with depression.

u sound like a troll being all abusive and all. regardless of what the addictions outcome is, if its just time wasted(WoW) or brain damage(drugs) the addiction itself is the same.

No, it isn't the same. The OP isn't addicted.
Most of the people that say "omg, I'm addicted to WoW" aren't really. They don't know what an addiction is. They're only saying it because other people say it.
And people like you believe it, giving them the ability to use WoW as a scapegoat for their own ineptitude. I can see why the do it. Why take responsibility for something when you can say you were addicted and get people's pity instead of their disdain?

If he can make a thread like this, it isn't an addiction. Do not encourage people like this. It's spitting in the face of those who are actually addicted.

u have a point there like a troll or attention seeker. and yes theres been heaps of people posting the same thing about WoW even when they allready know the answer.

but yea was fun tho typing how i quit. And regarding me quitting wow, i never posted one of these topics asking for help. so i guess that says something too lol

Me and my mates all played WoW for about 3 years and then one day... one of the guys said "I'm going to quit, it's making me fail uni". Me and the other mates all lost our inspiration to play from that day forward... It was kind of weird.

But if you have friends who play the game, try to quit with all of them at the same time, because you will look like a loser when your mates find out you started again.

It's a hard game to shake off, but it is certainly possible, I used to be the guy who used to say to myself "If I enjoy it, then who cares", but after being WoW sober for 9 months, I must say my quality of life has quadrupled plus I have lost 25 kilos and have gone back to uni.

I truely hit rock bottom playing WoW..
