I bought GalCiv2 because of the box art and the description on the back. Got a lot of play out of it
I got given a copy of GalCiv when my girlfriend's dad was cleaning out his closet in preparation for a house move. I've put hundreds of hours into that, easy. Don't even have GalCiv2 yet.

Chaos Legion.

My mother actually picked up this game for me, thinking it looked pretty good, so I humoured her, bought it and it turned out to be brilliant beyond all possible belief for me, it was very linear, but linear is a good for me, the combat system was enjoyable, the storyline was good, the difficulty was hard, but not too hard, I genuinely enjoyed a game my mother picked out for me.

My folks and I just bought a psx in 1999 at a Sony outlet store. Then we headed over to some electronics store that was closing down, and found their games section. They had one of those crappy memory cards that has different slots for extra save space, and they had Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for $5 brand new.
I had never heard of the game, but it looked cool. So, they gladly picked it up for me along with that horrible memory card. The funny thing is that it took me a few more years to really see the greatness of that game. I'd call that a pretty amazing find though.

I don't think I've ever just grabbed a random game - I'm too afraid that it'll suck and I just wasted money on it. I never buy a game without reading some reviews and getting some idea of what it's like.
I'm afraid I have to go with TheBenMan. I tend to spend a lot of time reading previews and reviews on various websites. So by the time a game comes out I normally know the ins and outs already. I guess boring people like us are just not adventurous enough :-(

Disgaea, I was never a big fan of Atlus. But i had a PS2, and was bored, and looked up games coming out for it. I saw an anime-looking game called Disgaea. Someone had wrote that it played like Final Fantasy Tactics (tactic based combat) So I bought it. Little did I know I would spend the next few months trying to level my characters up to level 9999! (yes >_> 4 9's)

Found grim fandango three years ago in a charity shop for £3. Didn't know anything bout the game beforehand. Only bought it had the words 'film noir' and 'land of the dead' written on the back. Still go back to it to this day.

For me it was Beyond Good and Evil, i bought it for my sister for the cube because it had a picture on the cover of a girl with a camera (she was and is into photography) gave it to her for her birthday and after watch her play it I grabbed it and blew my whole weekend finishing it I never forgot how much fun I had playing it, but it felt sadly to short.

Unholy War. Told an aquaintance of mine that it was my birthday (it was) and he said happy birthday and pulled out a copy of this game. It is awsome aswell. Also Second Sight was $30 bucks and turned out to be great aswell.

Definately Final Fantasy X, It was available in a discount package (3 games for....some price). It was the first Final Fantasy game i'd ever played and it remains to this day, just about the best game i've ever played....except maybe Portal!!!

Chaos Legion! Had forgotten about that game. All I remember about it was that it had incredible graphics, cool FMVs and incredibly addictive gameplay. The monster things you were able to control were awesome.

Burn the Rope [http://www.mazapan.se/games/BurnTheRope.php]. And another thing that is absoloutely wonderful I found, but not a video game nor a game, but machinima. Perfectly wonderful machinima. Chances are you've heard of Lit Fuse Films [http://litfusefilms.com/], or seen the Ballad of Black Mesa or Ignus Solus, their most popular works.
HAHA I just came across you have to burn the rope today, highly amusing. hehe

Need for Speed: Most Wanted. I'd never played a NfS game before and wasn't that interested in driving games until I played this and was like OMG!
