Shadow of the Colossus. I went in to get a random game, was recommended that one, and the only thing I was told about it was that I might or might not enjoy it. Freaking spectacular game.

Paper Mario. I got it expecting Mario... I was wrong, but I enjoyed it regardlessly.

Two games I hunted for that I knew next to nothing about (outside of the fact that they ruled somehow) were Valkyrie Profile and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure! VP was very good and I'm glad I got it. Rhapsody has terrible singing.

Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. I had never played RTS before, a genre which is now locked in combat with FPS for the title of "My Favourite," and SWGB was the first one. It also had one of the best map editors I have ever seen-you could do anything the developers did, even add in audio if you could figure out how to put the sounds in the game. I got it for five bucks off a guy I knew.

Dark Crusade. I took a look at Warhammer 40,000 and thought "holy shit, I gots o get IN on that." But, not being made of gold, I couldn't afford the models (at that point, I wasn't aware that building models is fun). Then, as if God wanted to let me know that He is benevolent, Dark Crusade. I got it for Christmas and played it almost non-stop for weeks.

Company of Heroes, which I bought based on one review, one preview and seeing the Relic logo on the box. Holy shit was I ever happy. Opposing Fronts was the only game I played for ages after it came out.

Disgaea 2. I was told about the nearly mythic rarity of the first game and bought this based on what I had heard about Hour of Darkness. It is by far my favourite RPG and my play time is at 140 hours. All this DESPITE the fact that it's Japanese (every so often, they have a revelation and blow my goddamn mind).

I also bought Painkiller and Supreme Commander based on very little research (Yahtzee's review for Painkiller, a glance at previews for SC). Both give me that "I am an unstoppable God of Death, flee before me pathetic mortals" feeling I get when I'm having way too much fun. I was laughing like a James Bond villain while playing Painkiller, I'm not even joking.

As I don't find to many games by accident: Halo. I've heard of the game once or twice, but nothing more. So I'm over at my friend's house and his dad has apparently finished Oni. So I borrow that, but in it's place in the case I find Halo. Definetly a WTF moment until I play it. Best mistake ever.

Actually, throw Serious Sam in there, too.

The SoulBlazer / Illusion of Gaia / Terranigma trilogy.

Granted, they were emulators because I no longer had the equipment to play them. What an outstanding set of games, especially "Terranigma".

Definetly Morrowind. I didn't really find it. My mom did. She got me two games for my newly received Xbox, and I wasn't the hardcore gamer like I am today, so I had no idea what Morrowind or Mechassault were. Mom probably bought them because of all the Game of The Year stickers on both games. Sadly, I was having too much fun with Halo 2 so I didn't touch both games for another three months. I then played Morrowind...best RPG I have ever played, and I promised myself I would get the sequel to this game when it comes out, and I have been a Elder Scrolls fan ever since.

I think MechAssault sucks in my opinion, though. I don't see what's so great about it. I have to admit I suck at the game, but I just don't find it fun.

I don't think I've ever just grabbed a random game - I'm too afraid that it'll suck and I just wasted money on it. I never buy a game without reading some reviews and getting some idea of what it's like.
same, i think the one i did buy randomly sucked.

although, outpost2, never got very far, being that i was never very good with strat games, but i still loved it.
