Code Geass. I hate to say this, but I pretty much just won.
Also, ignore all those people screaming "WRONG SECTION!!!". It really isn't the end of the world.
You prefer the Gundam/Pilot Candidate/Eureka 7 Rip-off over any of those just listed. I mean sure it beats Gundam Seed (because EVERYTHING beats gundam seed).

I'm sorry my friend but the top awarded animes of all time will forever remain Outlaw Star, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Dead Leaves, Desert Punk and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

If I had to choose only one...it would be Outlaw Star though.

Sigh... I don't like being an Anime snob, but I just am. If any of your 'favourite' or 'best' Anime include any of the following you officially have the mental capacity of a twelve year old: One Piece, Naruto, Dragonball Z, Bleach, Yu-Gi-O! If your favourite is Ikki Tousen or Goddanner or the like, please stop drooling, go have a cold shower (you dirty dirty person!) and go watch something decent, basically anything involving Mamoru Oshii, Shinichiro Watanabe or Mahiro Maeda, wiki them and pick a title, any title, please! You'll do us all a favour in helping develop better taste amongst Anime fans. But like I say, I'm a snob, lol.

The best Anime in my opinion is Stand Alone Complex. My personal favourites are Ergo Proxy, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, in that order.

How on earth would you define best anime ever? Its all completely subjective and i my opinion there is no 'best'. My favourite anime is (obviously) Hellsing. Out of the two versions i have to say i like Ultimate more, but the art of the original series is better (mostly because they didnt rely on cgi for nearly every frame).

The only Anime series i could watch longer than 10 seconds (actually nearly to the end) was Death Note.
Since i hate Anime, i guess thats a sign it must be good.

edit: Ok i loved Sabre Rider, Thundercats, Transformers in the early 90's good ol days

Meh, currently im into One Piece, and I don't watch anything else Anime so I'd have to say One Piece.

I'm no hardcore fan nor knowledgeable in that area so my opinion doesn't really count for much.
Trust me, if you dig, it gets SOOOOO much better
Sorry, my preview post was a little confusing; I'm no hardcore Anime fan, but One Piece is amazing.

If I didn't think it was brilliant, would I be up to episode 349?

FLCL or Beck Mongolian Chop Squad. I'm a fan of One Piece, but I prefer the manga over the anime. Has a more natural pace to it.

There's some juvenile aspects to the Naruto anime, but that hardly makes it for those with the "mental capacity of a twelve year old." Most of the juvenile aspects are in the filler. It's all completely original stuff independent of cannon, and needs to be released once a week without messing with the actual plot. It needs to be 20 minutes long, still have have the general theme of the actual series, and be released once a week. I'd like to see you do better. Also, does the fact that the main character starts out as a twelve year old mean anything to you?

Would you say that Code Geass, Death Note, or Full Metal Alchemist have more depth? Or list any other you wish to defend, I may have seen it.

Best anime ever is an impossible choice to make. I have favorites for each genre, but then you have to consider if real robot and super robot are two different genres and so forth.

The three anime series that come to me first when I think of "Epic awesome win" now are Eureka 7, Gurren Langann, and Bakemonogatari.

I did warn you I was a snob. "Mental capacity of a twelve year old" might be harsh, but I am really sick of the prevalence and dominant popularity of these mass-produced, serialized and overall uninteresting anime, and yes I have watched each one I've claimed to be such.

Anime I would defend? Death Note was clever but unfortunately I found Yagami Light really annoying as a character. Code Geass I liked for its revolutionary politics, though I haven't watched Season 2 yet. Full Metal Alchemist had both heart and darkness, elements which I really appreciated, and that goes double for Brotherhood, I might not watch the first series again due to the epicness of Brotherhood.

Other Anime I would defend and recommend are: Lain, Texhnolyze, Mushi-shi, Withch Hunter Robin, Ergo Proxy, Gankutsuou, Last Exile, anything of Ghost in the Shell, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, Speed Grapher, Beck, Fooly Cooly, Infinite Ryvius, Crest of the Stars, Haibane Renmei, Patlabor 1 & 2, Sky Crawlers, Jin-Roh, Eureka 7, His and Her Circumstances, Crest of the Stars and Banner of the Stars.

All of these are top notch anime in my opinion (though admittedly in no particular order). Take your pick :)

Oh, and no, the fact that Naruto starts off at age 12 means nothing to me. There are plenty of narratives both animated and otherwise that are directed at audiences that include 12 year olds that don't suck! (ie: anything by Miyazaki!)

Code Geass.
Sunrise decided to do a non-gundam series and pulled it off rather perfectly, I must say. Epic plot and characters, with a train-wreck storyline. It ended off rather disappointingly though.

tl;dr: Student attempts to takes over world.
