Eh. I don't think atmosphere means keeping you scared all the time of what might happen.

I think it has a lot more to do with getting lost in the game as it lives around you, and you don't feel as much like your controlling a character in a game built for you, but controlling a character in a world that was already there.
Contrast your definition of atmosphere with Silent Hill 2.
I get the impression that most people talking about Silent Hill 2 were talking about how scared the atmosphere of the game made them. Personally, I thought the game was built to scare, and I never got anywhere near lost in it.
The fact that it has the ability to inspire fear in the first place speaks of its immersiveness. I still don't understand why your definition is mutually exclusive.

Stalker definitely. Nighttime in that game is scary. everything is black, you only have a flashlight(a rather weak flashlight that can't light up too far), and you can hear a lot of ambient voices (like wolves, crickets, etc) and sometimes not so ambient (that slavering zombie mutant with a gas mask behind you). Sure near the end of the game that mood is ruined by night vision goggles and the exoskeleton armor that makes most ghouls a walk in the park, but the relief i feel for not having to wander around in the darkness still lasts. Its weird that my "quicksave every 5 steps" habit still persists.

Also i cant remember how many times i walked into a anomaly got gibbed/electrocuted/incinerated because i was taking the atmosphere in.

I didnt understand why Silent Hill was the top and nothing else came close, either. Both are just an opinion. In my opinion, video game horror isn't built to drop you into an immersive world, its to sell a ticket to keep you on the end of your seat, just like a horror movie.

Bioshock! or Fallout 3!
both very immersive
bioshock had great atmosphere, and the audio logs give you an insightful history on Raptures Rise and Fall into madness. and Fallout was a great RPG, i liked the first quests where u grow up that was a nice touch.

Fallout 3. There are so many small touches that add to the immersion without you even knowing it.

For me I would Probably say halo 1. I remember I was 9 the first time I played it and I was like "OMG i get to shoot shit" and then it was like woah. it got me into gaming.

Since then I have played better games, I have played worse games but nothing beat the feeling of me killing aliens in space.

Atmosphere doesn't necessarily have to be dark.

Hell Crysis had good atmosphere too, when it came to lush tropical settings...0o

SH2 is on top of the list.

Meh, first time I played it I was 20..someone told me it was the greatest FPS game ever made, I played it...thought it was ok....and didn't play an FPS game for years until I realized that one statement made by that guy was just b.s.

Bioshock, the art, the design and the characterisation of the setting just made it stand out as a histroically artistic game with a deadly undertone to it.
Runners up include Mass Effect, Halo series, Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Also just for the record, I just wanted to say it's been very fun bringing you FOUR THOUSAND POSTS!! That's right, this is my four thousandth post.

Yep, gotta go with Bioshock. Nothing else has the detail and originality, and, well, atmosphere!
Bioshock was another game like Condemned for me, it started off pretty damn brilliant but its climax was unsatisfying(which unsurprisingly is said a lot about me). I actually liked Andrew Ryan and loved how the story forced me to kill him in contrast to my actual tendencies thus illustrating the futility of choice in gaming or something but it all went downhill from there
At that part i had no idea what happened until my next playthrough, then i was like:
Wait......would you kindly.....son..of.a.*****!!

Another immersive game i would put forward is Dead Space, the logs especially

I would have to go with Demon's Souls, just the detail they put into the levels were just breathtaking and the sound effects also helped.

Then again the mass effect immersion was great...

and Bioshock...

While I'm on these forums saying this alot, it's still relevant in this thread:
Hey guys, how about Bioshock?
FUCK Bioshock. It was, as my favorite user review put it "Baby's first System Shock". It was missing HALF THE ENTIRE POINT of the atmosphere from the system shock series it spawned from. Tension. There was NONE. I was drowning in medpacks, ammo, money, powerups and other supplies through the entire Bioshock experience on the hardest difficulty (Which was until I was to disgusted with what they did to the Shock series to continue). Regardless of how creepy or eerie things looked in Bioshock, as soon as I popped out of the replicator after dying WITH NO CONSEQUENCE or break in flow or anything I had NO REASON to fear ANYTHING in that game, and then it lost all horror atmosphere to me.

Fallout 3, has its moments, I know when I was strolling through D.C. for the first time and the song on he radio was "Life's worth living", yeah right, I thought it was great, the irony in the songs. The game has a great atmosphere.

F.E.A.R., S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Fallout 3, Morrowind, and my all time favourite, Portal.

Portal kept up it's dark humor all the way through and not only stayed highly amusing, it got better.
F.E.A.R. has a lovely creepy atmosphere that's easy to get into.
Fallout 3 had a soundtrack and setting which matched perfectly, wandering around the world was a blast. (quite literally with that nuke..)
Morrowind had a sense of huge. I walked for hours across that world and still haven't seen it all. It's on my list for another run through, this time I want to be head of the assassins guild as well..
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is S.T.A.L.K.E.R... Can put you on edge or lull you into a false sense of security before shredding you. :D Fun as.

There's a few games on my list to play when I get around to it which should also be excellent. Mirrors Edge, Assassins Creed 2, System Shock 2, Bioshock, Oblivion. Killing Floor looks like it might have that quality to it. Haven't played them yet though.
