I'd take BGG's rankings with a slight pinch of salt, because of the way they average out games with small numbers of reviews by dumping in a huge number of 5's alongside the actual reviews, so you're only ever going to see the really popular games in the higher reaches.

(Also I'd never put Caylus in a top ten, it was alright, but nowhere near top ten material)

I haven't been a fan of board games for a while. Table top games like D&D have garnered greater enthusiasm from me and my mates and I try to play once a week.

hmmm

Monopoly is a classic. I played a star wars version of risk not too long ago and made for some massive slaughter therein. I played a zombie apocalypse style game once.

Not too much really.

I find their rankings somewhat agree with my own, seeing as the top two rankings are my favourite two games. Caylus I didn't like much either, and power grid slightly mystifies me at third place.

Still, as a general guide, the top 20 are fairly accurate.

There is a game called Betrayal at House on the Hill, fantastic game.

Also, EVE Conquest and Vampire: Prince of the City are good games for backstabbing each other.

Flux is a good card game that takes no time to learn and has interesting results. Add alcohol for more fun.

Ticket to Ride is decent, but after one or two playthroughs it gets a bit old in my opinion.

Fury of Dracula is fun, but takes 5 players and one player is against everyone.

Camalot is also good, and has the potential for backstabbery.

I'll have to check out that Betrayal at House on the Hill game, sounds interesting. I've seen Ticket to Ride in many stores and have heard good things about it...what is the point of the game?

My parents bought me Risk for Christmas one year, and since it was a gift, we decided to sit down and play it as a family. My dad went to invade one of my mom's areas and won; she flipped out and left the room. Risk is NOT a family game, lol.

Monopoly and Cluedo are my favourites, althouh Trivial Pursuit has a special place in my heart for being the only board game I know of to have caused a brawl.

My favorite, time consuming, ultra geeky game would be Twilight Imperium.

Nothing beats a game that takes 12+ hours...

Betrayal is fantastic. Everyone plays, and at some point during the game, a traitor is reveals (who it is depends on how it reveals. There is a book in the game that explains it). Once that happens, it is everyone against that person and the betrayer usually gains special rules and abilities.

For example, one game the house comes alive and tries to eat the players.

As for Ticket to Ride. You have to basically connect points across europe with rail lines and fullfil objectives based on cards you get at the start of the game. Once the game ends, you just tally up victory points. It is a fun and highly strategic game, but a bit slow for my tastes with the other games my group has as options.

There is one game out I can't remember (I think it was Shogun) that allows you to trade family members for military support, but you can trade other peoples family members and execute your enemy's mother if you play your cards right :D That game is fun too.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Last Night On Earth [http://www.flyingfrog.net/lastnightonearth/]

It can be short and is a huge blast. It's basically what the L4D versus should've been.

When I was a kid I could not play enough HeroQuest. It was my gateway drug to RPGs, table top war games, and miniature painting. I kinda want to buy the new version of Space Hulk, but damn is it expensive.

most steve jackson games are fun, like Illuminati and Munchkin. Stratego is like chess with a blindfold and risk is just annoying because it's based on dice rolls rather then actual strategy.
