I suggest The Legend of Drizzt series by R.A. Salvatore. Lots of interesting characters and adventures. Never a dull moment. (And, yes that is how Drizzt is spelled)

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.

1000+ pages of mature, unrestricted, violent bloody action, sex, betrayal, murder, douchebaggery and justice.

Also closely followed by the very tragic The Children of Hurin by Tolkien. I love me some romantic suicides!

I think The World According to Garp by John Irving is my favourite book. I am just a sucker for anything that shows the full life of someone set in the background of important cultural events-for example something like Forrest Gump.
Sounds interesting, must check out that.

There are two series.

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (the worlds longest triology)

and

Lord of the Rings

Honorable mention goes to:
1984
The Zombie Survival Guide.

Watchmen and The Batman Year One series (which technically includes The Long Halloween and Dark Victory for some reason)

The scarecrow series by Matthew Reilly.
Nukes (and massive explosions in general), guns, massive seal . . . things, plots to take over the world/kill the president/steal a spaceship and ninja death stars. Is there any better combination?
