No, seriously though, their corporate mission statement says that they "exist to glorify God," they've gotten in trouble for firing employees on religious terms, and they have a long history of collaboration with Focus on the Family, the most revoltingly homophobic non-profit you could imagine (they have a track record of fighting to get GLBTQA pride organizations banned from school campuses, getting gay marriage banned, and loads of other legislative bigotry).

They are just a little too fundamentalist for my taste, and any connection with FOtF makes we weary.

Also, Bobby Kotick, WTF? Why such a dick?
Well so do the Boy Scouts. There's an episode of Penn & Teller BS on it. Either way, I hate it when organizations like that claim to "glorify God," yet act with hate like that and end up giving Christians everywhere a bad name...

And did you look him up?

Uhm... Wow. That's really stupid.

Although I wouldn't mind a job at that Best Buy if it meant every so often, instead of dealing with some real problem from a customer, I get to spend 20-30 minutes in the back getting a PS3 firmware update and laughing at the dumbass who came in for this service.

That's fucked up. But you know what? People who are actually PAYING them to do this kind of deserve to get their money taken away

Fools and their money.
I am not saying Best Buy is in the right here but anyone that falls for this disserves the 30$ price hike.
The again its not like Best Buy has any form of competitive pricing plan. I enjoy the store but I never expect to find anything for less.
Fry's Electronics is where its at.
This blows my mind. What about the mom buying a PS3 for her kid for Christmas? Does she deserve it?
Because she failed to do any kind of comparitive research (shoparound it is your money) she does. Nothing demads Bestbuy be fair or nice in pricing or marketing. The same goes for any product.

This is old news somewhat, I believe that they did this a year ago or something.

Yes. Yes I did. Why does he have no tact? It's kind of a funny coincidence that I don't actually play any Activision games, not because their boss-man is a dweeb, but because I'm just not that interested.

Hmmm, well I admit I don't know all the policies involved. To be honest a lot of people are nervous nellies with big ticket items (and PS-3s are pretty expensive). I think the service is that if someone goes wrong with this, it will be Best Buy's fault. To be honest, I HAVE heard about firmware updates that have caused problems, as well as people who somehow got their PS-3 knocked out during an update and somehow corrupted the data and couldn't overwrite it (true or not), if Best Buy has the abillity to fix something like that (how is beyond me) it might explain it.

Chances are it's just a gimmick, and taking advantage of the less tech-savvy out there, "The Geek Squad" doesn't have the best reputation in that regard to begin with, but it's also possible that there is something to it.

I also suppose there are people who might in theory own a PS-3, play only older gamers, stay offline (as apparently most console owners do according to some statistics) but still want the newest firmware for whatever reason.

It's just a personal boycott, I'm not going to try and rally people to my cause or anything.

I'm just not going there from now on. Shame, they had a nice bluray stock, too. Oh, well. There's always Amazon.

Well. another reason that hates best buy. I already hate them because some prick working there took of a sticker that had a redeem code for my Word program, and replaced it! Fucking cunts.

They can steal 30 dollars from people, but if I stole a game from Best Buy I would be in jail.

Typical.

For the record... this isn't offered at the Best Buy I work at. It's not every Best Buy... while I agree there are some corrupt ones, luckily I work at a pretty good one. It's the same with Gamestops or any other retail giant. I could tell you 50 reasons I don't go to the Gamestop across the street (although the manager being a dick should be enough), but that doesn't stop me going to other ones.

Best Buy honestly has some great deals for gamers, so don't miss out of them just because of one little flub. Then YOU are the dumb one.

I dunno what is more amusing. That Best Buy actually did this or that people fell for it.

Exploitative greed is a good reason to boycott but I wouldn't have either of those companies on my list there's too many multinational monsters out there for those guys to register.

Preying on the wilfully ignorant is all good, but preying on the stupid? that's just wrong. They don't chose to be stupid it's a genetic trait which makes picking on them as bad as racism.

Although I've been guilty of taunting the odd idiot myself.

My thoughts exactly.
Please forgive my ignorance, but what'd Activision do? I need to know whether to put them on my list, which now reads:

Best Buy
BP
Wal-Mart
Exxon
McDonalds
Nestlé
Dominos
Chik-fil-A

I'm a harsh, harsh costumer.
Clearly somebody follows the media...And by follows I mean hangs on every word of...

Honestly I'm not seeing the great evil being done here. It's the employees that are getting the best deal here, they make money by pressing a button and watching a bar fill. This Best Buy could simply be trying to recoup losses from employees doing basically nothing and getting paid.

And if any of those employees are in a union, they probably can't be told to multitask, meaning they literally do stand around watching a download complete.
