What do you feel is the best combat system in any game?
my personally favorite is any Legend Of Zelda's, The lock on system is such an ease to use.
Yeah that lock on system in Zelda 1 and 2 were amazing...and nonexistent.

OT: It depends on the type of game.
For turn based RPG style, I always liked FF7's materia system. I also love Chrono Trigger's battle system because it doesn't go to a new screen. Also the double and triple techniques were a great idea.
And who can forget FFTactics, Chess meets an RPG?

As for non RPG, well Timesplitters is awesome. Max Payne was a ton of fun.
Lots of games have their own little quirks that make the combat fun.
And lots just copy paste bad controls with bad combat.
Fire Emblem gets credit for creating Chess Meets RPG, not FFT.
Ah never played it so didn't know. But oh well I didn't think FF created it anyway, it was just a good game. Maybe I'll try Fire Emblem one day.
Start with Fire Emblem 7, it's the best in the series.

...And also the greatest game of all time.
Thanks for the tip.
But I am afraid you are wrong,
is the greatest game of all time.

My vote goes towards God of War or Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (that is the only one I've played from the Sands of Time trilogy).

no but seriously i don't know there is no perfect system each to there own
I love how they didn't give you the "retreat" option until after the giant dinosaur boss fight(It ate all my men!). Patapon.....I fucking hate that game. It gets points for awesomeness and uniqueness.

God of War's combat system is undeniably fluid and easy to use.

It shalt be nominated!
I also love God of War combat system. I bought the box set when it came out because I didn't really look into the series. That was such a mistake (to me) because now I'm loving God of War III every minute I get a chance to play it. Such smooth combat flows - Good times. Good times.

Truly any game in which you can put a Welsh Corgi in a Pirate Hat has some merit, but I mist disagree.
:D
Actually my favourite game of all time is not Nintendogs.

yeh having your perfect level 10 guy getting eaten is not a fun time. not like i ever got that far but still. i loved the fist game but it got a bit old by the time of the second. i thought i would slip it in here just to be different.

I thoroughly enjoyed the combat in Spiderman: Web of Shadows. You've probably heard this before if you are at all interested in the game, but it's like you can fight in three dimensions, using webs, wall-crawling, attack in mid-swing, swinging while attacking - the whole thing feels smooth and immersive and honestly it seems to be exactly how Spiderman himself would be able to kick ass.

I think Assassin's Creed 2's system worked well. It could be a little buggy, but they really thought of a lot of things.

I had just picked up Collections some 12 hours ago, and I'm nostalgia-ing all over the place.

And while the combat isn't quite as smooth as the recently released GOW III, it hasn't shown it's age in the slightest.

Welcome to The Escapist, by the way! Be sure to ask if you need anything.
Sorry I didn't get a chance to say this earlier.

Just stay out of the basement. We never go into the basement. o_O

I'll keep that in mind. 0.o - As for the first two games, I shall forever love them.
P.s - Thanks for the welcome!

Well for RPGs I would have to say FFX-2's combat system was probably one of the best i ever used. To bad every other aspect of that game sucked violently...

For FPS i really really loved Killzone 2's tight game play style.

Finally Infamous was one of the greatest combat systems i ever used for that style of game.... Whatever it is.

Anytime, from one fan of Lucky Star to another.

Though on a more God of War related topic, it seems they've sped up the spiked ball ejection attack of the Cyclops in God of War III.
Going back through the first, getting nailed by those attacks because you happen to dodge a second too early never fails to piss me off. >_<

The World Ends With You.
The combat utilizes all aspects of what the DS can do, and it WORKS.

Man, Red Steel 2's combat was sweeet. Anyone who hasn't tried it is either a fool or penniless.
