I'd say either Alyx, because she is a likable character who actually helps, the guys from Bad Company, because they're somewhat helpful, somewhat likable, and funny, or the Companion Cube, because it's the cube.

Sydney in the Stealing Independence quest in Fallout 3. No idea why, but I really liked her.

she annoyed the crap out of me so i killed her and stole her ultra smg... imo very worth it.

I dont know if it counts as a companion but pikachu in pokemon yellow.

well... my fav is probably my friend when we are playing co-op technicly he is a companion.

Sulik from Fallout 2. He was beefy enough for the weaker characters to lean on in combat early on and awesome enough for any other character to bring along for the ride. Also giving him a Super Sledge and watching him whack and then chase someone off screen made any fight better.
