In that case one of those bioware/obsidian companions is a winner. I hate companions who are supposed to help, but only screw up because of their wonky AIs.

Edwin and HK were funny.

Bioware games come to mind, though technically you have a group following you, not a companion... Though only one or two are following you around at a time. Especially Kreia was a fresh change after the Jiminy the Cricket cast of KoTOR 1. I usually did keep her at hand the whole time despite her.. er, missing a hand.

My favorite is probably Epona, from Ocarina of Time.

Sulik from Fallout 2. He was beefy enough for the weaker characters to lean on in combat early on and awesome enough for any other character to bring along for the ride. Also giving him a Super Sledge and watching him whack and then chase someone off screen made any fight better.

Yeah, just dont give him an SMG or he'll kill you more then your enemies.
