Delta Squad from Republic Commando. I only had to fire my weapon during the big fights because of them. They kicked ass and never let me down.

But that is the way of the sith. It was a test to see if you were strong enough to follow Revan or become the new dark lord. Her stories and manipulative ways were also awesome.

Man, no one said Yoshi yet? crazy. He was so awesome in SMW. I also agree with Capt. Price in any COD.
No one dared mention Yoshi's name, before you. Not one of us can even begin to appreciate or put into words the amount of sacrifice [http://www.f-ram.net/media/erb/yoshifall.jpg] that little guy had to go through, just for Mario to get a girl, and subsequently proceed to change the whole world's colors all wrong. His is the name that is doomed to forever remain in Mario's shadow.

As for my own answer, I just played through Starcraft for the first time in 8 years, and for the first time without cheating. This made me recall how much I loved Kerrigan as a character, and I'll damn Mengsk for all eternity for leaving her stranded. R.I.P, the Sarah we knew and loved for her personality, not her wicked ability to corrupt Terran HQ's ;_;

My favorite is probably Epona, from Ocarina of Time.

--Xvito, keeping it excellent.
Definitely Epona. She never got in your way and had awesome theme music, so duh.

I was also a fan of Charon in Fallout 3 though. :D

Wait, ninja'd!

Wrex is the definition of awesome.

Fawkes is also cool to, but that's only because he can rip apart anything he encounters.
Wrex & Fawkes are both awesome too.

Damn. I can't choose between all of them!
Can I have a top 5 instead?
Epona, Charon, Wrex, Fawkes, & Garrus.

Okay, Garrus wasn't that great but I liked him! D:
A third the Epona thing. Either her or Clank. What makes a great companion character to me is usefulness. If all they do is stand around say "Jenkies!" then who bloody needs 'em. They better contribute or get up out the way.

Dogmeat and Fawkes. Why? Because they end up becoming so powerful you can just walk across the wasteland watching as everything in site gets either mauled by a dog or gets turned to swiss cheese by a minigun.

Either Companion cube or Dogmeat. Because they don't jump in your way, get kidnap or take up 15 minutes with dialogue.

Companion Cube
This. The only companion that didn't try and get me killed while I pull their ass out of the fire. That didn't try and steal my fun by trying to play itself. And that didn't annoy me with stupid phrases repeated in 3 second intervals.

I would have to say that the horse Agro from Shadow of the Colossus is my favorite. Only when he isnt busy being scared of anything larger than a loaf of bread. That gets annoying.

I mean really... Even without taking a whack at the "most companions are complete retards that turn out to be bigger nuisances than assistants" dead horse, what other character can you name that doesn't say one word, isn't even alive, stays with you for no longer than 10 minutes, yet manages to elicit such strong feelings of empathy?

I can name characters that spend the entire game with you, that talk, that let you control them, and by the end of the game they still didn't manage the same reaction out of me that little metal cube did.

It's uncanny.

I'd say either Alyx, because she is a likable character who actually helps.
I don't know why but whenever I played Half Life 2 I couldn't bring myself to actually like her, she just got on my nerves half the time (I felt like I was forced to like her, not because of who she was or any personally appealing qualities but because I was supposed to) , her effectiveness half the time was made painfully apparant because it was often highlighted at times when you happened to be unarmed and vulnerable (such as the tunnels at the begining of Episode one and the area where you act as bait while she snipes, you largely 'need' her). Her character felt somewhat forced to me (they were trying to make a good person and she ended up being somewhat unrealistic in my eyes).

My favourite companion in a game had to be Garrus and Wrex from Mass Effect (I don't really know why, I just liked them). Minsk from Baulder's Gate is a very close second (I just liked him).

are you saying you like being cruelly manipulated?
and do most of your tests involve old women throwing homing lightsabers at you?
