Colin McRae Rally series prior to the DIRT game were brilliantly good. Nothing beats going down a British country road that is only just wide enough to house your car whilst you're charging down this road in, preferably, your Subaru Impreza at 100mph. But that's just me and my rallying obsession.
Surprised nobodies mentioned SimBin's creations like the GTR series (sp?) and the latest 360 release of Race Pro which is actually a very good simulation, although online has a lot to be desired for in comparison to GRID. Still, we're talking about what game creates a good driving experience for a single player, not a bunch.
Have to agree with those who've mentioned Rollcage and Burnout, those games were very good. Particularly Rollcage which excels in Multiplayer mode, sort of like a Halo...with wheels.

Burnout has that charm of speeding through traffic which I always dreamt of doing but never have the balls to do in real life. ;-)
However, I can't understand the NFS claims here. Particularly from the later games, they hardly create a decent driving experience. Like GRID, it creates an arcade feel which I'm not particularly fond of for single player modes but for multiplayer it works a treat.
Still, those are my two cents about the whole thing.
