Still gotta give it to F.E.A.R., even all these years later.

All of them have great A.I., even 3.

Super Mario 64 had such good AI. The goombas are really good at spotting you when you get too close to them and the bobombs have great pathfinding skills when they are chasing you!

Metal Gear Solid.
Face it - if that box down the corridor kept moving out of sight, you'd be too creeped out to check it out.

ARMA 2
I've never been fucked over by AI as much as in that one, they do everything flanking, using vehicles, using everything at their disposal, different soldiers use different tactics depended on their location and load out, they fall back and regroup, set up ambushes. I was blown away figuratively and literally

You mean the Nintendo port the AI was thick as shit in that one. Enemies fall asleep all the time, like the corporation only hires people with a sleeping disorder.

Best AIs:
Stalker: Call of Pripyat; they make occasional hilarious (though sometimes frustrating) whoopsies, but by and large they can be quite frightening in their precision and coordination. Animal AI use hit-and-run attacks, relying often on numbers to distract you.

Total War: Shogun 2; the AI is insidiously smart; they try and distract you from their real goals and use flanking and ambush tactics heavily. See that hill; they'll sit on top of that to force you into a disadvantageous attack. If you try the same, they'll strive to lure you from your strong point.

I would have to rate Rainbow Six: Vegas 2's AI as among the best and worst simultaneously; it wins the award for most unpredictable(quality). Sometimes the enemy AI flank while their friends pin you down. Other times they charge down long corridors with shotguns, blasting away inaccurately, only to get a bullet in the head. AI for team mates is also unpredictable; you tell them to clear a room and its a 50-50 they'll do an inhumanly good job and drop all the terrorists or charge in and get stuck on a box and die from enemy fire.

I have to go with the original Pac Man on this. Sure it's an old game but those ghost know how to kill me well....Especially on later levels when they all take meth...

I heard that AI was faked somehow, that it was mostly scripted events which give the illusion of 'intelligence'.
In the first game ( I disowned the other two as 'sequels') whenever I would rush, they would hold back and sometimes actually catch me in a crossfire. When I would hold back and try to "cut 'em down" they would rush around and flank. Seemed pretty legit to me, but I haven't played it in a while. Perhaps I just didn't notice it...

Rage has really good AI. They regroup, change positions in cover and are very dangerous.
Yeah, the AI in Rage actually caught me off guard a few times, but half the time they still make the same idiotic mistakes as any other AI-Move out of solid cover I couldn't hit them behind to a less defended location, move from cover into a WIDE OPEN SPACE where they present their nice blood-filled skulls to me, or my favorite; move from cover to hide behind something with explosive canisters/barrels next to it.

Some of the dumbest AI I remember, and this does not lessen my opinion of an otherwise great game, are the combine soldiers in the first HL2 game, they would basically just charge toward me into their deaths, never using cover or any method of attack other than "Fire gun, occasionally throw grenade." The AI was a bit smarter in E1 and E2.

1/10 times the AI in Far Cry 2 get's really clever and they double back to flank you quite brilliantly, sadly 9/10 it's horrifically broken.

But still that little gold nugget was worth mentioning :p

Just try to win combat training in black ops on veteran. Just try. They play with the same tools you do, and they are insanely good.

Almost any half decent chess simulator if you stick the A.I on the highest level its brutal although my experience is pretty limited most of them seem to have good A.I (because they need it)

That's because they can track you through walls and will auto-aim at the head. The bots only sometimes lose because their AI is so simplistic they don't know how to dodge fire or use grenades effectively. I would call that bad AI.

They vastly improved the AI for Arkham City, on top of what they did before, when they discovered they were under attack they would travel in groups to avoid getting picked off, now they finally notice those gargoyle statues you can swing to, and they shoot them down once they see you using them

Has anyone here played Soldier of fortune II ? cuz that game kicked arse!
Yeah, that game was exceptionally good for its time. One of the first games where you could really see intelligence in the enemies' actions. Although they do lose some points for being able to see through dense foliage as if it wasn't there.

Aim straight at you every time they pick you as a target?
That sort of thing came straight from the Doom 1 era and it's called cheating AI.
