No real answer to this, is there? Everyone has a different favourite fictional, it's like finding the best movie of all time or the best music piece of all time.
Thats why this is an opinion thread.

For me, it's Tamriel and Middle Earth. Can't be beat.

For me it's 40k. I'm a sucker for Wraithlords<3 I think it just got a bad name because of the over hype and use of Space Marines.

I would wanna say Warhammer 40k but when you think about it that would be a HORRIBLE place to live, given that (and I paraphrase the actual words from the rulebook) you are one amongst untold billions who's bleak existence is short in a universe where life is cheap.
If you don't work in a manufactorum as a proxy slave, a bleak death world, arid wasteland world, or an agri world the best you might hope for is to be IMP Gaurd and then probably die a horrible death at the hands of god knows what.

Amazing universe, I just would never wanna live there.

Touhou. It's so loose that it allows for anyone could make up a story if they wished, and plus the amount of music remixes based off the original bgms is staggering. To say that there wasn't something behind it would be preposterous.

There's a lot. However some of the greatest, in my opinion would probably be the Thief-universe, the Dragon Age-universe and the Mass Effect-universe. With Ebberon and Elder Scrolls as runner-ups.

I actually did a little thinking about this very subject after I finished the Harry Potter books. I think it kind of depends on who you are. Harry's world would be a good place to be just a regular old wizard; you could have all manner of awesome adventures all the damn time.

However, the Mass Effect universe is the best one to live in if you happen to be the hero, or just "special" in some way. Seriously, if you're in the Alliance navy, your life is full of nonstop badassery. And having biotic powers would be the bomb.

So, yeah: Either the Wizarding World, or BioWare's interpretation of the Milky Way galaxy in the future, depending on how (relatively) "normal" or "special" you are.

There are just so many. Star Wars, 40K, Tolkien's Middle Earth, Stephen King's Midworld and Iain M. Banks's Culture are all very high on the list for me.

For universes created specifically for a game, I think it's either Final Fantasy VII or Half-Life. FFVII has so many wonderful and evocative locations like Midgar, Gold Saucer, all those mountains around Nibelheim, I just love it. And Half-Life, well Half-Life 2 when the universe came of age, is a brilliant modern take on classic dystopian sci-fi worlds from writers like HG Wells and George Orwell.

Oh, I was talking in terms of how well-written or well-realised the world is. In terms of where I would want to live... the Culture from Iain M. Banks's novels, definitely.

I agree with others above that the 40K universe is probably the worst possible place to live in the whole of fiction :p

Gotta go with Fallout. Retro 50's, nuclear destruction, what else could you ask for? amazingly put together.

Apart form that probably either Mass Effect or The Elder Scrolls series.

I saw a thread like this about 3 days ago. Wow. I might as well respond because I didn't last time.

OT: Mass Effect. The universe feels so fleshed out, especially in ME1. The second installment didn't have as much of that. And the Fallout universe too.

Yeah, except for the fact the Seanchan, the Aiel, the Shadow, the Whitecloaks, and pretty much everyone else is out to get you thanks to massive racism, fear, and ignorance...sure.

What? I'm confused by this statement. Are you saying that massive racism, fear, and ignorance is an unreasonable thing?
No...just makes it a pretty crappy universe to imagine.

Fantasy: Toril (Forgotten Realms)
Sci-Fi: Star Wars (Expanded Universe)
Contemporary: DC's Watchmen
Western: Werewolf the Wild West (White Wolf TTRPG)
Earth's Dark Ages: Vampire the Dark Ages (White Wolf TTRPG)
Near-Future: Neuromancer (William Gibson's awesome book)

The Shin Megami Tensei verses would be cool...though the end of the world thing would be a downer but the demons are cool and it might not be doomsday.
The Elder Scroll verse as well, though I'd want to be a Nord.
Mass Effect would be nice, as long as I didn't end up having to help Sheperd.
Dragon Age might be good, as long as I could help take down the Chantry.
Also, The Princess Bride world and The Moomins world.

That's a tough one. I'd say either Resistance or Elder Scrolls.

Warhammer 40k lore is also very interesting to me, but I can't say much about because I haven't played any of the games.

Fallout before the bombs fell. A stuck-in-the-50's Sci-fi America is pretty much Unique as far as I can tell.
