Well the Marvel movies were good.
The Lego Movie is also high up on the list.
Let's be Cops and 22 Jump Street had me crying.

Many good ones to choose from.

I think the one that I was msot hyped after seeing was Guardians of the Galaxy, so I'm going with that one.

...the "best" 2014 film I've watched is probably The Grand Budapest Hotel
Was that this year? I thought it was last year.

Ah it was 2014. I'll go with that one, then.

Also enjoyed Days of Future Past and Locke. Guardians of the Galaxy was fun but I wouldn't call it a great movie or anything. Going to see Gone Girl shortly, have high hopes for that one. Love Fincher.

I fully anticipate that when the dust settles one or both of Boyhood and Interstellar will emerge as my favorite for the year.

Last year's favorite was "Her".

The Winter Soldier hit the ball out of the park but damn... Guardians of the Galaxy decided to go for the Grand Slam, coming out of nowhere and making me think that maybe Marvel just has the formula of how to make comic book movies right and no one else can do it.

I only saw 3 movies this year, so I don't have much to go on.

Godzilla - A pretty good monster film, it suffered from its sporadic cast more then anything else. Bryan Cranston delivers an excellent performance, as usual, but just about every other actor drops the ball. The monsters were done excellently, as were the fights.

Guardians of the Galaxy - An excellent movie all around. Good action, good effects, good acting, good story. It suffered slightly in pacing, but this was mostly a result of being an Avengers movie, without the preceding individual movies for each character. Besides the rough hitches resulting from such a large cast with accompanying back stories and resolutions, is was a pleasure to watch. As far as pure entertainment goes, GotG was the best movie of the year.

Fury - Just saw this yesterday, and was quite refreshed by it. It was less a movie, and more of a picture - the characters are static - they do not change as the movie goes on, you simply learn more about them. The war doesn't change doing the course of the movie either - you simply see more of the battle scape, more of the horror. The action scenes were fantastic, and while there were some minor historical errors (Most to accommodate cinematic flair), it was very faithful to history. My pick for the best movie of 2014. It may not have been the most entertaining, but it was noble, and well done. And perhaps the best part of it was that Shia LaBeouf was actually very, very good.

The Lego Movie.

It somehow managed to balance being:
a) A 90 minute action flick with multiple set-piece scenes.
b) A whimsical but surprisingly deep explication on metaphysical philosophy.
c) A social satire with several tongue-in-cheek pop culture references.
d) A kids movie with all the hooks they need (catchy song, simple laughs etc).
e) Product placement for the Lego Group and Warner Brothers.

It's a pretty amazing achievement really. Also the animation is fantastic.
I really wasnt expecting to enjoy this but I genuinely loved it. I was expecting a dumb kids movie but it was actually incredibly deep whilst being whimsical at the same time. A few things worth noting: a) it makes you think about how much control we have over our lives and our perception of reality in a matrix-like way without over complicating things while referencing the matrix, b) It pokes fun at western capitalism (the villian is called 'lord business' its not even subtle). C) there are some great cameos (no spoilers) and the actors are mostly the actors who played the original role. D) on a similar note the cast is outstanding with a load of highly rated actors (Morgan Freeman, Liam Neeson and Channing Tatum to name but a few)

I could go on with more points but I'd be here a while. Truly a movie that everyone in the family can enjoy

Edit: Wolf of wall street gets a mention. I know IMDB states 2013 but it was released Jan 2014 in the UK

I've only seen four 2014 cinematic releases (Edgy of Tomorrow, Winter Soldier, 22 Jump Street, and Snowpiercer) and out of those I think the Tom Cruise one is my favourite.

For films I've seen this year for the first time... There are many more, of course. A couple of good ones worth mentioning: Her, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Amadeus, Rush, and Rango.

Of the movies I've seen this year, my top 5 would be as follows:

The Lego Movie-Everything is awesome. That is all.
Guardian's of the Galaxy-Great action movie that expands marvel's universe quite nicely
Capt. America 2-Pretty much the same as GotG, and helped push Agents of SHIELD when it needed it.
The Boxtrolls- I'm a sucker for claymation movies so I knew I was gonna enjoy this from the start. Plus there was a joke that made me burst out laughing in the theater.
Book of life- Another movie where the artstyle caught my attention more than the story and thankfully I was not dissapointed. overall great movie and I wished I had seen it in 3d.

I missed quite a few this year to be honest. I did manage to see Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: Winter Soldier though, both of which I was very impressed with. Hot damn Marvel, how do you do it? I'm also one of these seemingly mutant breeds that liked The Amazing Spiderman 2... mostly cause I never read the comics and had no idea what happened at the end until it happened... broke my heart.

Maleficent was... interesting. I thought it was pretentious as hell for the marketing to try and make it out to be the "true" story of Sleeping Beauty but it was an interesting take on it. Having said that, it fell into the same trap as Megamind and Despicable Me; "Let's make a movie where the main character is the villain! Except they're just NOT the villain in the least!"

I never got to see The Lego Movie, Godzilla or Edge of Tomorrow but I'm now thinking I should given how well received they were.

I really, really liked Edge of Tomorrow. The whole aesthetic was amazing, they puled off the whole concept pretty well. It was badass when it needed to be, funny when it wanted to be. Despite a lot of people I know not wanting to see it because Tom Cruise stars I thought he was brilliant.
.
I'll have to agree here

also its funny I could not get the motivation to go see guardians

God, I can't even get over the Lego Movie; I just thought it was precious and amazing and funny and the animation was INCREDIBLE and the humour and aaaaaah

Guardians of the Galaxy was also surprisingly awesome as well. Either way, I hope Chris Pratt wins something next year for one of these

This is tough. I really loved Captain America 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy. But the winner for me was The Grand Budapest Hotel. That movie was insanely enjoyable. It's funny, I keep telling myself I don't like Wes Anderson, and yet I've seen every movie, so clearly I'm wrong about that. This was my favorite Wes Anderson hands down. Funny as hell.

I finally got to see Guardians yesterday.

It was one of those films that I wanted to like more than I actually liked it.

It's pretty funny, but other than that... eh. I have this nasty, cynical little suspicion that if it didn't have the Marvel name on the front it wouldn't have done nearly so well.

its funny the marvel label was part of the reason I didn't want to see it

that and my terrible aversion to obnoxious white guys being the leads in everything...which I know was probably unfounded but that's what a patriarchal society will do to you..it turn you into a bitter crazy person

shame though as I fan of The Fith Element its right up my alley on paper (and its not like the fifth element doesn't have its own issues I couldn't rip to shreds)

Not sure how much my thoughts on this year's movies are worth when I've only seen two - the only movies I care enough to pay to see in theaters at this point are Marvel and Disney movies (I know Marvel is Disney, but I mean specifically the one big kids' movie they do each year), everything else I usually catch a year or so later on DVD, if I remember they exist and still care enough about them to watch them.

That said, Captain America 2 was a pretty damn good movie. Guardians was good, too, but it felt more like a collection of good/funny moments tenuously strung together than a proper story. Admittedly, I've seen it twice and Cap 2 only once, so the flaws stand out more, but I walked out of Guardians the first time and thought it was great, but not as good as Cap 2, so...*shrug*

(Of course, the year's not over yet: There's still a chance for Big Hero 6 to win me over, and I'm becoming very tempted to go see Book of Life from all that I've heard about it, so who knows if Cap 2 will still be in my top spot in a couple of months.)

Haven't seen many movies this year but I saw and really enjoyed The Lego Movie. My parents didn't like it though so I think I might have to disown them.

Whoa I missed this, when did it come out? I really enjoyed the first film.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and The Lego Movie. 3 films that I didn't expect much from, and 3 films that absolutely hit the ball out of the park in terms of quality. Marvel had a great year, and I hope that this form of quality extends to the next 10 films between now and 2019. Granted, however, I think I only really saw about 4 or 5 films this year at most, so, you know, not exactly much to choose from.
