I think you missed how broken the junction system was to those savvy enough to use it properly.
Exactly, those who know about a system can utilise its full potential. I don't know many inidividuals that play the game like how you describe below straight out the box. Therefore it adds replay value. This is why I didn't mention it as a "minus" point.

For instance, at the start of the game I could play cards to get some tonberry cards. I refine these cards into tonberry knives, then into 100 death magic. I junction said magic to status attack as soon as I get Siren. Bam. 100% chance to inflict instant death on 90% of the enemies in the game. Combined with initiative, the game poses little threat to me now (excluding the odd boss of course, but that can just be GF'd into the ground.
Your earlier complaints of drawing magic taking too long, and then citing the above is a little extraordinary.

I'm halting here, it's getting into silliness. If your aim is to convince me otherwise that this is not my favourite game then it is a wasted effort.

I've played through it a number of times, and am more intune with its flaws, and can list many others. But I won't, and I shall now depart.

Final fantasy VI. No douchie main character I have to care about through the entire game.
The main character is what makes FF for me. The way the story is told is through the eyes of the main protagonist and it's great watching these incredible stories come to life through the character and how the character interacts with other characters and how he grows as a person.

E.g Tidus from FFX started off a dumb, annoying idiot but in the end became a very honorable character who ultimately becomes the real hero

The first one.... it revolutionized so many things:

1. The first to open up a non-linear path.
2. The first to reward the player with additional abilities for exploring said non-linear path.
3. The first to have little easter eggs, like having the ninja do more damage weaponless than with a weapon.

Most of the game's trademarks were built in the first one, with a party system, healing, status spells, potions, fire, ice, bolt spells....

What they were able to pull off on a simple Nintendo cartridge was phenomenal.
I dunno, FF2, though the black sheep of the family, added the meat to the bones of the original game.
More spells, mysidia, Cid, chocobos, character development, the mood of the future games...
the list goes on and on.
Without both FF1 and 2, really, the series wouldn't have been what it is now.
Well, obviously several games have added different elements, but the basic themes that hold true through pretty much every game in the series were laid out in part one. Like Airships, elementals, status effects, weapons/armor being specific to classes, turn-based combat, 3-4 people in a party, etc.
So... you reiterated your initial post?
Do you realise that I wasn't saying you were wrong? I was only adding to your original sentiment.
My apologies, I thought you were saying that 2 was better. A lot of people like to argue with me on here :D

I enjoyed VIII the best. It came out when I was preparing for college so it was the most relate-able (not that was much of an accomplishment given the previous storylines) and it was just more fun to play in my opinion than FFVII (which was also very enjoyable.)

I do remember the final fight being very epic (and in the FF-Tradition, taking WELL over an HOUR to beat) and the first time I fought it, I actually got to the final stage of it before getting wiped out. However, given how long I had fought to get to that point only to DIE, I thought to myself "I can't keep getting into these hour-plus battles only to die" so I had to make sure that the next time I fought, I finished the job. I think I ended up grinding to add at least 10 levels to each of my characters (or rather the characters that I would use and keep resetting until it gave me them) and then laid the smackdown on the jerk.

Tough call but I'd go with FFX. Save for one scene (you know the one) I don't find the voices annoying at all. I consider the battle system to be the best one in the history of the series. Same for the music although it has some fierce competition from VI and others. Sure, it could have done some things better (the final battles, the Celestial weapons, and it felt very short during multiple playthroughs) but all of them have flaws. FFX simply saves most of its for towards the end.

Hmm...I'd have to give it to what was released as Final Fantasy III here in North America (i think it's really FF6?) Either that, or one of the gameboy entries: "Final Fantasy Legend II" or "Final Fantasy Adventure".

FFX actually killed the series for me. Way way way too linear. Completely lost interest in it after that.

Yes, and it's because of that that I ended up never beating that game and ended up selling it. Actually I did that for the last bunch of FF games that I played (FF IX, X, XII) but I hope to not let that happen with FF XIII if I end up getting that.

FFX- Best story in my opinion, and isnt that what FF games are all about.

I hear FFVI has one of the best, but have yet to play it. I have yet to play fully- II (half way), III,V, VI

I think overall my favourite has been X, but I like different things from different games.

VII - Ok, I'm not a big fan of this I admit. I don't know why, but I've never really been able to get into it (I have completed it though). I think its partly because I played it soon after it was 1st released, found it enjoyable, but prefered the later ones more and so never gone back.

VIII - I really liked this game. The story was entertaining and I loved the GF/Junctioning system.

IX - When this 1st came out found it a bit of a shock as it was a large shift from the serious look and tone of VIII. Also, the levelling system was really annoying for someone who tries to get 100% as I ended up over levelling much too quickly. All this meant I didn't really enjoy it as much. Its on my list of games to play again though so hopefully I'll enjoy it more.

X - Great story, (some) likeable characters and the sphere grid was a great idea. Also had a nice balance with the number of side quests.

X-2 - While I'm not a fan of the story, I really loved the Dress-sphere system and that made up for a lot. However, it really felt like there was too much to do and so I found I got a bit bogged down trying to complete all the side quests.

XII - I REALLY hate this game partly due to the fact it didn't feel like an FF game. You never really did anything in the story, with your character seeming to just be along for the ride. The gambit system seemed to be designed just to take the fun out of the game. The grid levelling system was a nice idea, but ruined by the fact that a) you had to level the skill then go buy it from a shop and b) you had to waste points learning how to wear a fucking hat!! If XII had been released with a better story and not under the FF label, I would probably have liked it more.

Edit: Spelling

Wow. I really struggled to play through FFVIII but it seems heaps of people really like it. Although from reading through the posts it seems to be a loved it or hated type of situation.
FFVII is one of my favorite games ever, but if I take away the nostalgia value it'd probably be IX or V for me. I just love the job system(s).

Ten. The characters and story are better than any game ever made, it is the greatest game of all time so naturally it is the best Final Fantasy game.

Because a good system should be immune to abuse. Even the materia system had less flaws than this.

Your earlier complaints of drawing magic taking too long, and then citing the above is a little extraordinary.
A casual gamer would be annoyed by the constant drawing and drawing of various magics.

A savvy gamer can abuse the system with a little work.

Surely you can see that?

I am by no means trying to force you to discard it completely, I am merely posting an opinion in a thread that asks for opinions.

FF8, definatly, the story is amazing the GF system is great. It doesnt destroy the game by making you rely on it.

The amount of variety in characters and ways you can attack with each character are almost endless.

And you get to fly a school... around... a world.. as much as u want, and if that wasnt enough for you. You have a war, in the air, agaisnt another flying school.

Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy VIII.
I like VI so much I own it twice. On Playstation and on GBA.
It's one of the first FF's I ever played and it's so rock solid and so likable.
I Own FF VIII on the pc and I think it rocks It's character designs is consistend over the entire game. (looking at you FFVII)
The story is deep and emotional but not in an emo kinda way.

VIII, IX and X seem to be winning at the moment, which is a suprise seen as I thought it'd be FFVII
