Best Final Fantasy game and why?

I'll put down Final Fantasy VI. I like the high amount of customization you can do, while still keeping each character somewhat unique. I like the plot, especially the way it branches out towards the end. I like that you get four characters in your party, unlike most of the later games. I like it much.

Final Fantasy VII, ENTIRELY for the sake of the setting. It was gritty, mystical, cool, humorous, and weird, weird, weird, weird, like some kind of cross between Snow Crash and Myst. There had never been one like it before in any medium and there hasn't been one like it since then. It's a pity that Square never affords their imaginative, fun locations the same care as their characters these days...
