I know this has probobly been done to death, but which of the Final Fantasy games is (in your opinion) the best?

For me, as blasphemic as it might sound, my favorite is 9. Ever since since 7, the Final Fantasy games have been getting darker and more anime in tone and style. While there is nothing wrong with that, Final Fantasy has always been a fairy tale in my mind, and 9 is the one that captures this the most.

Second, I like the characters, especially Zidane. There have always been two types of Final Fantasy lead characters. You have your brooding, emo swordsman with a dark past (I.E Cloud and Cecil) or your Luke Skywalker-esque teenage boys with screechy voices and whiny personality (I.E Tidus and Vaan). The two exceptions to this are Squall and Zidane. Squall is just a jerk and a doofus with no experiance, where as Zidane is both competant like Cloud (with none of the brooding) while being optimistic and fun like Tidus (with none of the annoying).

Anyway, this is turning into a rant, so I'll end it here. Take it away.

This is one of the few threads that you should never, ever make. Ever.

Expect much rioting.

...Anyway, I have to say that my favorite FF7 if only because it was the first PSX game that I've ever played. NOSTALGIA FACTOR IS A-GO, CAPTAIN!

IX is not a blashphemic choice in the least, it is one of the few in the series with virtually no flaws.

Best? Final Fantasy VII. It's the best designed, best written, and best scored game in series history, and has the proud honor of popularizing the series and the genre, despite being at the same time completely non-commercial.

My personal favorite? Final Fantasy VIII. I really like Draw/Junction, I think the scaling makes it more about what you can do than what attacks you can take, I really relate well to Squall, and on a character level it's probably the most in-depth and realistic character portrayal in the series, which is how many critics determine the best art. I also really dig the score, it's highly under rated. The game itself gets far too much hate.

My personal favorite is 6 (sticking with the Japanese numbering).

My favorite is 8 but I'm gonna have to say the best is 10 by far. The voice acting is bad but everything else took such a huge step forward its hard not to love

*cough* Sorry. I love Final Fantasy VIII/8. A lot. I want it to work again. I'll cry otherwise.

That's a bit... contradicting.

12 for me. The only thing about that game I didn't like was Vaan and he could be safely ignored for half the game and the combat system and amount of post-game and optional content are outstanding. 9 comes a close second, then 4.

Saying FF9 is your favourite isn't blasphemous but comparing a great character like Zidane to Tidus sure is :p

Wait, what? He's consistently the most competent character in that game, and he's definitely at least the 2nd most competent protagonist in the series. I can't refute that he's a jerk, but at least he's a realistic jerk.

Well I base it on experiance at the start of the game. Squall is a student still learning the ropes of his trade. Zidane is a thief that has been practising his art for years. I guess I just never liked Squall. Wolverine is a total jerk too, but atleast he is fun to read or watch. I always found Squall grating imho.

My favorite has to be FF6. It was the game that got me into the series in general, though I agree recent entries haven't been the greatest. FF6 had a lot going for it, IMO: a huge cast of awesome characters (except Gau), a great battle system (for it's time, anyways), and a great story that I could follow relatively easily.

I agree wholeheartedly. 6 is definetly my second favorite in the whole series (with 4 being #3).

Final Fantasy Tactics for sure. Probably one of the best games ever made in fact. But if you're talking about the main series, I'd honestly have to say X. I really liked that one.

I've always been in an unfortunate position because I basically am Squall. I picked up that game X years after getting it and I was like "Hey, I'm a depressed intelligent person as well. Hey, that's what I think about death! Hey, that's what I think about good and evil!"
It really sucks BEING one of the most hated characters in the series.

You ninja'd my answer, FFIX.

Its only weaknesses are the weird character designs. There's super deformed and then there's terrifying.

Being a Realist is alright, I know what you mean about Squall being one of the most hated though. There were alot of things about FF8 that I diddn't like. If Zidane is my most favorite Final Fantasy character, then Rinoa has to be my second. I'm not sure if it's just this thing I have for brunettes, but Rinoa was a character I actually wanted to help.

VII because I haven't played VI yet. I will soon, but I'm in the middle of IX.
