Not exactly a fire level, but a fire boss (dragon). Still very fitting I think.

My usual go-to is Mega Man X for good fire themes, but as for something slower and more primal-sounding:

Furious Fire is good in the previous game too
Damn, you beat me to it.

Here are my examples:

The second song just has the rapid pace of Genesis quality to let you know you're in hot trouble now.

Does lava count? I think so and thus:

Absolutely love it.
Hell yes, it does. The songs I played from Ristar has fire and lava. You could put Marble Zone in their if you wanted to.

Thermal Base theme in Freedom Planet is awesomeness imo:

Dunno about grim but it's certainly modern.

Crisis City may be from a shit game but it has some fucking awesome remixes for Generations.

How's this, from Broforce? Technically, it's the "hell" levels, but that should still qualify. Lots of metal tribal drums and varying intensities.

Then there's Undertale. Maybe a little more upbeat than you were seeking, but no less fiery.

Yes, the Broforce stuff is perfect, thank you so much! Hell definitely counts too. I've already got the Super Meat Boy hell themes in there :p

Wait, you said grim and modern? Oh...well, never mind.
By "modern" I really mean "anything PSX/N64 era or later." I love my NES music but it's got a particular quality to it that I'm not looking for. This is definitely modern enough. A bit too cheery, but still a great listen. Thanks for sharing!

now are you looking for music used in fire type levels, or music involving the words heat/fire?
Yeah, wanted to ask the same.
Anyway, Cave Story+ has some nice music in the latter matter:

I also see now OP, that you are looking for "more grim and modern stuff". Does it need to be video game music? Because if not, i got something else...
...for you.
It doesn't matter what the title of the song is, if that's what you're asking. Fire-type levels were what I meant, but anything that gives a feeling of heat will work. It doesn't have to be from a video game either; I was just using them as a springboard because "Fire World" is such a widely-used trope in that medium. The Batman stuff is great.

Thanks for your help!

Ha. I skipped over this at first because the cover made it look like ice level music. Glad I gave it a second glance. Awesome share!

Fire! ...i'll teach you to burn!

Um, weirdly precise question to answer...youngest, fondest memory is Super Mario 64 bowser level music. But since learning a lot of music theory/performance between now and then, it is a pretty simple/basic tune to come up with, But effectively catchy and efficient for its' purpoise. There are more taxing, interesting pieces that are currently not quite memorable enough. I feel i am probably letting down the inner music snob by liking this, but fuck that guy, he never did anything for me.

Flame Over...ok, the whole game is a fire level, considering you are a fireman in the game. But its' main jazzy theme tune is so bloody catchy that every time i attempt to play the game, the music gets under my skin enough for me to reach towards the nearest instrument. In fact, the last 3-4 times the game was booted up were to solely listen to the cheery funky jazz in the alternate dimension of Luigi's mansion.
I find it ironic that you went for the bowser level music when Mario 64 has a dedicated fire theme. But you're right, that is a DAMN fine song (certainly the best on that soundtrack) and I can definitely see what you're getting at in terms of sounding fiery, whereas I had already considered Lethal Lava Land but dismissed it for being too mellow.

Never heard of Flame Over before. But you're right again, that's catchy as all hell.

Thanks for sharing!

Your Crisis City video isn't loading for me. What's the song called, so I can search it out myself?

Thank you kindly!

You're all terrible! There is only one answer to this!

It's a great choice, but I'm making a playlist here! If everyone just linked Bolero of Fire it wouldn't be very helpful :p

Well, Bolero did make the 'list, but I went with this remix. I assume you've heard it already, but just in case...

Btw Action Jack when you're done would you mind posting your playlist (if possible) in an updated OP?

Having a list on standbye for fire themed stuff actually sounds pretty cool. Besides I'm toying with the idea of getting a playlist for each "element" and would be redundant to go through fire again when someone else already handled it.

Well, a large portion of what I'm using has been posted up here by other users, but... sure, why not?

You may also be interested in knowing that I did this exact same thing for ice a while back and got a lot of great hits. http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.866890-Best-Ice-level-music?page=1

I also have a friend who wants to assemble a wind list, so hit me up if you've got any leads on that!
