FALLOUT 3 IS A FUCKING RPG IN A FIRT PERSON STYLE BUT NOT A REAL FPS JESUS!
Fallout 3 is an FPS, so it has a level-up system and a few gameplay elements to help out WoW nerds who have trouble aiming and firing without their precious turn-based combat, without those it'd still be roughly the same game and I'd still enjoy it. Besides, the 20 level cap is shit anyhow. And the third-person elements don't really matter as many good FPS games have some third-person. The only good thing about VATS is the gruesome deaths in slow-mo.

Perfect Dark. Rare took Goldeneye, slapped on a sci-fi setting, added some of the best weapons ever (laptop gun? i want one!) and made a masterpiece.

I gotta say I enjoyed

Doom 3
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
UT2004
Farcry 1 and 2

more than I did Halo 3, (offline other than UT2004), and in some cases the single player of COD4

I'd actually say it's a first- and third-person action-adventure with RPG elements. I NEED SOMEONE WHO PLAYED THE ORIGINAL FALLOUTS TO CONFIRM THIS.

The old-school gamer in me screams Perfect Dark and Goldeneye, both for the N64. Deus Ex is also predominant.

Now, the new-ish games: COD, Halo, Fallout (it kinda counts), Half-Life... the obvious answers.

You do realize that Fallout was originally an RPG, right? So technically, the FPS elements were added in to help dumb people who don't know how to do anything in an RPG except kill things.

Anyway, for the topic, I love Half-Life 2 and Deus Ex, but Halo 3 also holds a special place in my heart.

No shit? Hell, I'll admit it still has some RPG elements, but so did BioShock. And I love hearing RPG players call FPS games stupid when their skill-less and usually boring games are so bad, I'm surprised even one person can get addicted to them, I'm reffering of course, to WoW. I'm terrible at FPS games, I'll admit it, but at least they aren't grind, grind, grind, online social relationships, and some more grind for good measure.

If you really are thick enough to think Fallout 3 isn't mostly FPS, then I guess I'd throw my vote in for CoD4 or possibly Quake 4.

I think both have their individual merrits.
I personally believe that Halo is far superior online as it's more about skill and less about being in the right place at the right time and not being snuck up on by some dick with a bayonette.
But single player, for sheer epicness and variety, I think COD4 wins. The Halo campaigns have always been pretty lack lustre in my opinion. There wasn't a single stand out level in number three anyhow.

Recently: Left 4 Dead...For being made by Valve, and designed to stop griefers and medic hogs...Plus, Zombies, and the ability to play as the aforementioned Zombies.

Few years back - Star Wars: Republic Commando, for FINALLY giving me control of a Clone Commando...WITHOUT nerfing the enemies.

Absolute Classic - Tie between GoldenEye and Perfect Dark.

Half-Life 2, definitely. Also, I'm surprised no one's mentioned Metroid Prime yet, although it might not count.

As for the Halo series, I will never forgive it for introducing the "go suck your thumb" mechanic.

What you are thinking about are MMORPGs, and an inaccurate view of them at that. Most people who think they are all grinding usually have never gone in a group for a dungeon before. In addition, I was primarily talking about FO1 and FO2, which were straight up RPGs. If you honestly think that either of those two games take no skill, I would recommend actually playing either of those two. Most FPS gamers probably couldn't get past the character creation screen. I also said that I loved HL2, Deus Ex, and Halo, which (usually) require more than 1 brain cell to enjoy (And I'm good at a wide variety of other shooters as well: I'm technically more of an action gamer than an RPG gamer).

Also, aren't FPSes a grind as well? It may be slightly different, but it is usually just "shoot, shoot, shoot, cuss, reload, die, respawn, repeat" in the long run.

Neither Call of Duty 4 nor Halo 3 deserve such a title.

Anyways, I'll go with Half-Life.

As a campaign game, I would go with Halo:CE
As a multiplayer game i would have to say that i like COD4's multiplayer experience more than Halo 3.

Awesome Side Category- Left 4 Dead, sheer genius

Not so awesome side-note- I liked Half-Life, but never really LOVED that game, it was just a pretty good shooter.

Best console FPS: Goldeneye
Best PC FPS for single-player experience: Deus Ex or System Shock 2, no contest
Best PC FPS for multi-player/LAN experience: I'd vote Quake 3 Arena for balance and keeping it simple . . . this is probably debatable. Halo (at least the first two) does not win this category EVER. The best FPS games are fast, challenging, and require lots of skill and a little luck. The shield gameplay element of Halo is doing a great job of ruining FPS games as we knew them in the golden years of the genre (yeah, I just invoked Doom).

You can flame me if you want, since my opinion isn't second to God's or anything, but if anyone at all denies that Deus Ex and System Shock 2 are two of the greatest games ever made without peer or comparison since, you obviously know nothing about the history of gaming, FPS games, or even what a good game is period. I include them separately because they're legendary and also technically FPS/RPG's . . . so they aren't true FPS games.
