Cod 4 is an awesome FPS. I think it is much better that cod 5 too because the whole first/second world war game genre seems to be getting a bit tired.

For me, I'd say its a contest between Crysis (original or Warhead, it honestly doesn't matter which), Left 4 Dead (the only multiplayer FPS that I've ever liked), Half-Life 2, Fallout 3 (it's not often that you see someone try to mix RPGs and FPSs and pull it off), and Painkiller Triple Dose edition (not much of a story, but it is mindless, stress-relieving fun at its best).

Metroid Prime Echoes, was great, really made the two worlds aspect click from A Link to the Past, though it shares more similarities to Oracle of Ages where past affects present like dark affects light but it goes both ways here. Ammo system was good, where although conserving it was pretty important, it's kinda hard to run out in the middle. The worlds were big and the bosses interesting. Split screen multiplayer and the return of the screw attack really helped.

Obox is great (especially portal) but I'm always going to have a soft spot in my heart for Unreal Tournament.

Great weapons, great stages and the best part were the mods. I had crazy mashups involving DBZ characters vs Warhammer 40k characters with voice mods of George Carlin, Pulp Fiction, and all sorts of other crazy shit on weird stages people made.

Yeah I play CoD4, then try to go to another FPS, and its just not the same. I love the realism that CoD has.

Mirror's Edge on PC, because I'm a pacifist. To this day, I can get through it with only 7 KO's.

Halo 3, has the most involving storyline (bioshock didn't make me really feel for any of the characters in the way halo did (I actually teared up when Johnson died, no homo) plus the protagonist is awesome and interesting, however I doubt it would have been such an involving experience had I not read the books beforehand

Multiplayer also goes to Halo because it is the benchmark for modern multiplayer IMO, and I don't think that any game has come close to its level of gameplay (CoD 4 did come close though, unreal tournament 3 was a shocking disappointment regardless of platform), on top of this Halo 3 still recieves updates and is a constantly fresh experience.

Graphics goes to fallout however because of the stunning visual depiction of the destroyed Washington DC

What Do You Think Is The Best FPS Out There?
Welcome to the Escapist.

Bioshock. Maybe Fallout 3. Everyone seems to love it but i'm yet to play it. It's sitting on the shelf, screaming play me.
Fallout 3 is an RPG =/
Okay, cheers.

I guess I'll go for Timesplitters series then.

Half-Life 2 the "granddaddy" of all FPS's? You're either very young or only recently started playing video games. The really granddaddies of FPS's are Wolfenstein 3D and Doom. They started the genre. Half-Life 1 pulled it out of the hum-drum corridor shooter shtick and turned the genre towards more narrative ideals. .
Just because you start a genre doesn't make your videogame automatically better than something that came out later(I never implied Half Life INVENTED FPS) and it's because of the story and pacing that make it better than generic shoot em ups
I wasn't implying that Wolfenstein or Doom were better than Half-Life. I feel the exact opposite in fact. I was merely stating that one can't call Half-Life the "granddaddy" of first person shooters. Sorry if I came off as confrontational.

This thread is pretty much sure to have been done before, but I'll throw out here early on:
Half-Life 2.
Physics, story, pacing, characterization, fun, etc. are all unparalleled.
ACK, I hated Half-Life 2. The episodes weren't bad but Half-Life 2 sucked.

Time Splitters 2 gets my vote. It's just pure fun.

If only the one on Xbox didnt suck, and had more or less the same multiplayer system.
If they would somehow re-release the original with updated controls (updated graphics optional) and the original multiplayer (with Bots), I would play the hell out of this game.

I personally don't think anyone can just say which is the best FPS because it's one of the genres which the most sub-categories. You can have pure story base FPSs like Half-Life 1 and 2. Then you have multi-player ones such as Halo 3 or Killzone 2. Then you have RPG FPSs like Fallout 3 and Bioshock. Honestly all those are worth being the best but if you want my honest opinion, I'd go for the whole Halo series because it has a lengthy and highly detailed story that goes. Halo now is the top spot on Xbox Live for weeks and has been out longer than CoD:W@W AND MW. Although I'd admit there are a ton pre-teens playing that game, you have a friend and party-up system for a reason, so you don't have to play with them. Halo 3 has the most replayability for me for both campaign and multi-player. You have forge mode and theater mode. Oh and Halo has Bungie, a very dedicated game developing company, that has the largest support for any single game out there. But that's just my pick.
